There ya go, $5,000 for a disposable 250cc go cart from China, how can Elio make a real car for $6,800. Impossible.

And here's a 600cc one for under $4k. (Of course, you'll have to add import tax and all that)...

Basically, these are built around Daewoo Matiz body shells, with a single front wheel and a 250cc thumper (or, in the case of the last one, a 600cc engine) powering a live rear axle.
Don't expect AC... though you do get a blower.
Cornering in these things is... interesting. You'll try turning at speed (speed here defined as 30 mph) maybe once, and then never want to try it again. Top speed for the 250cc units is around 80 km/h.

There are electric units, as well... the ones that formed the basis of the Xap Zebra. God knows what they did in the US to quadruple the price of those turkeys...

oh what fun...

I wouldn't disconsider one of those Chinese enclosed 3-wheel "cars" if I could get one with a centrally-mounted cockpit. I have already seen one in Uruguay a few years ago. It would sacrifice some space which could accomodate one more passenger, but the weight bias would be less problematic. And the very same vehicle could be targetted to LHD and RHD markets

Two weeks ago I have been in Gramado city with my dad and my stepmother, and I spotted this Bajaj RE4S used as a mobile billboard for a high-end furniture shop.

The Robin had its engine up front, which means most of your weight is up there. The Chinese threes have the engine over the rear axle. Which helps... unless you have a very heavy driver up front. If there's one thing that will convince you to take a diet, it's having a trike lean precariously to the side while you're driving.

I've always wanted to drive a Bajaj auto-rickshaw. We get the Piaggio versions here... called the A.P.E. Very interesting little things. 400cc diesel. You don't get five doors and a blower, as with the Chinese, but I'd rather put my money in an Indian diesel than a Chinese thumper any day.

Nothing wrong or slow or tippy or dangerous about Delta trikes (ones with proper CG unlike the clown cars in the videos):

Elio is still hanging on advertising today. It may stay around [in memory at least] as long as the Vigilante has in my memories of a 3-wheel Chevrolet V-8. That "V-rod" must have been "too much" for Chinese to copy!

The video was really funny but in the suggested videos there is another one where some Brits take 2 robins and modify and race them. One if them the guy is drifting around the track like a pro. Like the corvair I think it more a matter of the cars handling differently then an average car that gets people in trouble. I bet a Trooper or Bronco II was just as prone to rollover as the Robin.
