Slingshot is a toy with no regard for fe, all-weather use, or carrying capacity.
Elio is a fund-raiser. But presumably equipped well enough for commuting.

Is the Polaris Slingshot the 'exception that proves the rule' about successfully entering the on-road vehicle marketplace?
Hardly. It's competitor is the BRP Can-Am Spyder Roadster
OTOH Polaris purchased Brammo in 2011
....and GEM in 2012
....so maybe they will electrify this:

Elio is theoretically aimed at people who don't park like jerks.

That's why they build prototypes, watch for it...
Road and Track journalists have a close look on the Elio prototype in Big Apple traffic. It had a semi-complete interior and was powered by the prototype 3-cylinder engine. They noticed the shift linkage was not smooth, the exhaust system unrefined, creaked and rattled, and the engine mapping was not tuned. Also, there was noticeable aroma of gasoline inside the trike.
Why engineers build prototypes, they take it for a ride in the city streets of Manhattan...then @ 21:30...

Prototypes, prototypes, prototypes, prototypes, prototypes. How frigg'n complicated is a trike anyway? How many years and millions of dollars does it take to accomplish what a good home fabricator can do in his garage?

Whelp, there's your problem:
Body Part Falls Off Elio 3-Wheeler During Live Test Drive
It needs a third mounting point not in line with the first two for triangulation.
Christopher Jordan -- You've got some Facespook lurking in the tail end of the link you posted. I sanitized the link for this post.

Thanks. No major engineering problem with the Elio fender, but it started Jalopnik off! This is their second article today- also copied and pasted from Facebook:
Elio Motors Has Spent More Time Lobbying For Three-Wheel Cars Than Building Actual Cars

Maybe.
If the studs are tall enough for the two set screws per; even if the set screws are missing running over road debris should wedge it.
More likely a stud failed and the 2nd one couldn't hold out.
