The BMW K75 engine would work well - very smooth, water cooled, fuel injected and set up for a dry clutch. It would have to be mated with a transverse 5 (or 6) speed manual and automatic.
Which points to something about Elio developing their own engine - they'll either have to find a matching manual and auto transmissions - or they have to develop their own ...

Which would bring even more delays. And, things will be even more proprietary and less "off the shelf"
What are these people thinking anyway, They should have stuck with something already available, improve it to be more efficient without going overboard. And finally, concede to a bit of failure and admit to the fact that they will need to lower expectations to something more realistic and attainable as far as fuel economy goes. (and cost too) THEN get this damned thing on the road. They can make improvements and changes in the next years model.
Crud, makes me think they have snot for brains.

If you build the most powerful, fuel efficient, reliable, high performing aerodynamic car EVER this year- what will you build next year?

To be fair, an hybrid super-capacitor system would be amazing in my old Beetle.

The HMV Freeway got by with a 16hp Tecumseh and a Comet Torq-a-Verter, and it got pretty good mileage. Is it crucial to have an expensively engineered bespoke engine for the Elio? I like the motorcycle engines that have been proposed, something torquey from the heavier end of a manufacturer's range would make for low-stress cruising and be better suited to accelerating the Elio's greater mass.
+1 on the capacitor hybrid, even better for accelerating.

They should have just kept that improved version of the good old Suzuki G10 engine and call it a day, altough they sure could eventually expand the engine options.

video /
There's a softball interview on Yahoo Finance with video of the interviewer driving the prototype around a parking lot.
"Sounds like a racecar!" says the reporter.
Suzuki/GEO 1.0L under the hood, shown in one shot.
I chuckled.

And it has a teaser overlay that covers 1/3rd the video, and it won't go away ...
