This seems a bit extreme: Volkswagen scandal: German police raid HQ - Oct. 8, 2015

Apparently, CNN has a video play automatically with every article, but apparently the police were sent in to secure evidence.

Diesel has never been clean, just like coal and gasoline. That's the reason I drive on renewable fuel - it may pollute as much as any other car, but at least it is coming closer to carbon neutral.

Much preferable to EGR. Direct exhaust treatment allows the thermal efficiency of the diesel engine to get better fuel mileage, instead of clogging the intake and reducing combustion temperature.

I actually remember reading about this issue years ago and having an argument over how it wasn't really an issue and now it appears VW t'd off enough of the wrong people for action to occur.

All seems odd to me.

That news source that always maintains a steady level of reliability, The Onion, had a take on VW:

Per Consumer Reports (via Jalopnik):
Consumer Reports Finds How Fuel Economy And Performance Drops When VW Diesels Stop Cheating

Looks like it loses 3-4mpg when it is in the test mode that lets it cheat on emissions. Who knows how VW will "fix" this, but if it always runs in the test mode, expect a significant hit to fuel economy.

RedDevil -- I've always respected The Onion (Bush: 'Our Long National Nightmare Of Peace And Prosperity Is Finally Over'), but this is unacceptable.

Nobody (except for us few die-hards) thought abandoning the flat-four boxer rear engine was VAG losing their way to comply with emission standards. Now in the USofA (UK? nope)(Russia? No probs) suddenly they're the bad guys?

Oh, the cartoon is funny because it is way over the top. Tongue in cheek - and a fat camel tongue at that.
And obviously this is a common problem, not limited to VW - I would not be amazed if in the end it turns out that VW is one of the companies that manipulates the least. They just had bad luck. Makes me think of the time when all the boys in school did break a certain rule, and I (a reluctant participant) was the only one that got busted for it.

But it wasn't the Onions finest work.

Didn't say it wasn't funny.

My last edit was after your post. I went back and added my candidate best story: Bush: 'Our Long National Nightmare Of Peace And Prosperity Is Finally Over'. That went up immediately after his first election. Did you look at the Road&Track article?

Old Tele man -- Could you restate that as a car analogy?
