Can someone give an example of a 'repair' or 'modification' that couldn't be done using OBD-II?

Windows 95/98, (n):

32 bit extension and a graphical shell for a 16 bit patch to an 8 bit operating system originally coded for a 4 bit microprossessor, written by a 2 bit company that can't stand 1 bit of competition.
People say that if you play Microsoft CD's backwards, you hear satanic things, but that's nothing, because if you play them forwards, they install Windows.

Of course being able to "inspect" code doesn't mean to say anyone is allowed to amend it anyway.

There was the Command Prompt in Vista. Is that still available in the newer versions? Maybe that's what was meant by 'DOS'.

Here's more than you want to know.

TLDR: CANbus for function, OBDII for diagnostics.

OK, but on that basis then the current Mac operating system (based on Unix) is little more than a 60s style serial green screen terminal with a little bit of graphical fluff added for the fanbois
When I first read this I was reminded of the so called seminal work on computers - in the begining was the command prompt.
Then I remembered the guy who wrote that has since switched to using a Mac.
I'm not opening the OS wars - I like all of them

I like Mac OSX. It is is BSD Unix/Mach kernel fork called Darwin. That is directly accessed through Terminal. The eye candy layered on top used to be called Aqua, it may be something else now. I lament as it gets more like iOS (the touch-screen scrolling and such).
I'm trying to be more tolerant of Microsoft lately, since Steve Balmer left.
Have you read Stepheson's Cryptonomicon?

No, I've read the command line essay though. I tried reading another of his books years ago but got frustrated - can't recall exactly why, it might have been the west-coast techie, floaty type language used - that might be me mistaking him for Gobson though.
Might try again some time.

It's thick and heavy, but the research he did for that book led to Mother earth Board:

Its at Wired 4.12: Mother Earth Mother Board
Quote:
In which the hacker tourist ventures forth across the wide and wondrous meatspace of three continents, acquainting himself with the customs and dialects of the exotic Manhole Villagers of Thailand, the U-Turn Tunnelers of the Nile Delta, the Cable Nomads of Lan tao Island, the Slack Control Wizards of Chelmsford, the Subterranean Ex-Telegraphers of Cornwall, and other previously unknown and unchronicled folk; also, biographical sketches of the two long-dead Supreme Ninja Hacker Mage Lords of global telecommunications, and other material pertaining to the business and technology of Undersea Fiber-Optic Cables, as well as an account of the laying of the longest wire on Earth, which should not be without interest to the readers of Wired.

Good old "too big to fail" may have lost this round.
GM would like to think they own the license to the software, but you didn't sign or click a license agreement when you bought the vehicle so it looks like they don't own it as much as they want to, or thought they did.
Expect to see that change now.
GM believes and is still arguing that vehicle owners do not own the vehicle software.
I believe they are expecting a retroactive law that totally violates the constitution giving them ownership of software going back who knows how long.
