What I found interesting here were the brackets holding the front splitter. Rather than the usual clevises, the bracket is captured between the body and fender, held by the bottom two fender mounting bolts.

Notice that tow hook right above the left bracket.

The tow hook uses the bumper bracket mount, while the bracket used body mounting bolts. Appropriately.
The part I didn't like about the car was the VTEC inline four where the back seat used to be.

Rather have a small block 8 back there?

I like the Berlin Buick for the paint and portholes, but putting the engine in the passenger compartment is suboptimal.

Any proposed repowering for a Beetle will never be my cup of tea if it gets rid of the rear seat, or the luggage space which is already on short supply

It's in the back seat because when you flip the trans around, you either have to increase wheelbase, or............
I did know of a couple frunk small block mods, but they were even more obnoxious, imho.
I do understand your point of contention. The alternative is a block hanging out of the engine compartment, which is a definite fuzz attractor*
Suspect you got the pun.

It doesn't show well in this picture, but this had a VW flat four in front and a Porsche 924 transaxle in the rear.

Not a VW, but it's better ask forgiveness:

911 with a back-dated nose, 356 Speedster windshield and a Runge style top.

As it had already been converted to front-engined and with a solid front axle, maybe I would also resort to a solid rear axle if I were doing something similar. It does surprise me that some folks use a solid front axle on Volkswagen-based rat-rods, even though it looks quite cool.
