The engine seems to be a Type 3 one, notice the axial cooling fan

Freebeard: saw an oddball VW yesterday at home despot which leads to the question: Was there a notchback that used the 77 ty3 front half? Didn't have my phone for pictures, this thing was chop topped, and looked like a squareback front grafted to a notch back half. Got to go there to spend more today, maybe it will still be there.

Yes.
Three body styles, 2 eras (known as short nose and long nose).
