One might be able to replace the plastic gears with metal ones at some point. The NY Finger Lakes are beautiful too. In hilly country having the option of dynamic braking is worth considering.

Yes, the planetary gears inside these motors can be replaced/upgraded. Lyen makes a hardened steel sprocket for hub motors. 25 bucks each. We would need three.
LYEN Controllers
And here is a guy who experimented with installing them on his trike:

Finished build:
Pretty stealth! And, I was expecting the geared motor to be louder than it is. It's not entirely silent, but very close.
Total time of assembly was around 2 hours, mostly due to having to solder together a harness to connect my 3 batteries in parallel, and having to run to the local bike store after popping a tube because I forgot to move the rubber liner that covers the spoke holes in the rim, to the new rim.
Acceleration is pretty similar to a 50cc scooter, and top speed appears to be around 20mph. With a 115lb rider, it's entirely unnecessary to pedal even up the steepest hills.
This hub motor does indeed freewheel, and very well at that. There's virtually no drag.
I can probably get a smaller bag. The 13.2ah of batteries take up about this much space:

Surely you must mean 13.2 ah of batteries?
I've got a 36V Bafang BBS02 and 8 ah of lithium and a 7-speed rear cassette... in 1st gear the acceleration is nuts, but it tops out around 13-14mph. In 7th, the acceleration is acceptable, but the motor's getting worked pretty hard. I usually do 4th or 5th for top speed (around 28 mph level ground no pedaling).
If I just use it for tough hill climbs, it's good for 50 miles If I don't pedal and just mash the throttle all the way, it'd probably only last about 8 miles.

Instead of a smaller bag, make a separator to wall off the battery and use the residual space inside the bag for some storage.

Those are cool, Ecky. From what I have read wheel covers or deep dish designs need to make an even plan with the outter edge of the tire, if possible, for best effectiveness.
