I think when you are ready for new tires, you get new 15" wheels and good LRR tires. Since you are replacing steelies, you'll definitely benefit in terms of unsprung weight, and double the benefit in rotational mass. On top of that you'll have gearing benefits from the taller setup. Try for 175 width tires, which is probably what you run now, right? I think I have seen 175s for 15" but I'm not certain.

i was thinking about 14" steels to 15"alum myself. i'd like them, but its just a want, i really cant even justify a set of the lightest oe saturn s-series wheels from a junkyard for $100, largely because im thinking defenders. they come in my current size anyway. come in 13s too

....maybe i should find a new 15" tire to want more

I struggled to find a good narrow 15 inch tire to put on my 15x7 enkei RPF1 wheels. I really wanted to have that stretched look on the car since the wheels are wider than stock to keep the footprint small and narrow. No such luck though. Most of the LRR tires were not available in the narrow sizes. I think I was looking for a 165 though. 175 might be a little better, but not as common as the larger LRR comparables.

I'm keeping my 13's and just put on a set of Defenders. Yeah, the selection in 13's is pretty bad, but good on Michelin for offering their newest model in this size.

If you avoid any (most / all?) braking, you don't lose much to heavier wheels. It takes more to accelerate them, but then you get that back in momentum as long as you don't waste it on the brakes. Handling is a separate issue, but at 16 lb these aren't too heavy.

When I was looking for tires the defender was not offered in 13's yet. Good to know it is a viable option now!
