(Our Prius has CVT)
I don't know about the Mirage, but I recently rented an Altima with a CVT and hated it. While going down even modest hills, the engine would rev to 3000+ rpms presumably for engine braking. This was surprising and disconcerting to my wife (as a passenger) who would rarely even notice this sort of thing. Acceleration seemed anemic for the rated power of the engine. There seemed to be no connection between what the engine was doing and what the wheels were doing. In my opinion, it takes the worst characteristics of a conventional slush-box and exaggerates them.

I have a hard time calling Prius' Power Split Device a CVT. At it's heart, it is a fixed planetary gear set that is varied by two motor-generators and the ICE. You vary the ratio not by altering the ratio of the tranny, but by changing the RPMs of the motors. This really has no similarity to a true CVT behind a single motor.

Strange, I thought the Altima (and the Sentra, both now the previous generations) had best of breed CVTs. They allowed nice slow rev cruising and both cars yielded excellent MPG according to the factory FCD. I thought the Quest van, with it's high weight and more powerful V6 messed up its function...it felt confused and overloaded, always hunting through ratios and never settling down.

The Mirage comes stock with some very good LRR (low rolling resistance) tires. If you end up replacing them, you'll likely see a drop in fuel economy. The trade off with the Dunlop Enasaves (your stock tire) is that they are a bit squishy, and not the best for more aggressive handling.

If you get a roof rack, I'd highly recommend only installing it when needed. It will mess up your aerodynamics and also cause a drop in fuel economy.

There are a few aeromods you can do to improve fuel economy. MetroMPG did a few to the Mirage he had from Mitsubishi for a week. He detailed his work here:

You misunderstand his post......

No one was asking you to leave or trying to run you off.
THe poster has done a great deal of research on the car you are driving and was merely giving you another source of information on your new car.

Ecomodders, in general, drive older cars. You are probably the first poster w a 2014 Mirage.
They were simply trying to provide you with as much information as possible.

Welcome aboard, debburyl. Nice move on the car, but watch out for the roof rack! Only have it on when you actually need it or it'll hurt your aero and suck mpgs away.

Thanks, to all the advise, and good comments. But as a side point if your trying to help someone. You don't throw any negative. Comments on the side, saying he had two posts and he should leave the forum.Ive always strive to say nice comments even if I don't care for the car.
