Green Earth Technologies - Biodegradable Motor Oil
Anyone heard of this stuff?
Green Earth Technologies
It's made from left over chopped up cows and is supposedly biodegradable.
My question is:
How can anything, once removed from an engine and containing various types of nasty/toxic metals, be bio-degradable? I mean, you can't just throw this stuff in the yard. You'd still have to recycle it, right?

The chopped up "left over cows" part kinda irks me a bit... with current processing, there really is no such thing as "left over cow".
If you check, there is another thread about this company on here somewhere... can't remember the title, though.
I think back awhile ago, noone could get any real information on the company, nor could anyone figure out where to buy their products. Might have been a different company, though.

well, you can get some answer (can't vouch for it being true or not) here:
New Cow Fat Motor Oil Biodegrades in Days
It is mentioned it's not suitable for all vehicles.

They claim the tallows, the part that they use, leaves so much left over that like 80% of their product is made from it. I guess with the mass of so many cows being slaughtered there has to be a good bit leftover for whatever it is that they do. I mean, even if 2% of the cow was left, times that by a lot of cows and you can get a pretty good amount of material.
That being said, I'm a vegetarian for a reason. I just wonder which is the greater evil; the oil industry or the meat industry.... At least with cows the money goes to "local" farmers....
Plus, all of this only applies if their product is actually good and does what it says it does.

I worked in a beef packing plant a couple years ago... they sell the bones to a company that makes fake ivory piano keys. All the "waste" is used in pet food, and goes to a rendering plant across the street, which smells horrible. Even the teeth are sold to another company that does something with them. They really don't waste anything.

That's interesting....
I mean, they say that it consists of tallows and other natural substances. I wonder how much their product changes with the supply/demand of beef fat. Does it lose its effectiveness?

I think it warrants more research, for sure.

I plan on it. It's like $40 for a case from Amazon. I'll have to weigh that cost. I usually use the cheapest stuff I can find.

Don't forget to do a UOA on your current oil and the new stuff at the same mileage, and post up the results.
