Exactly what I was going to say. I wouldn't hesitate to get a corolla, especially for a long highway drive. I was actively shopping for a corolla wagon (matrix) when I found the Fit and bought it instead.

Epa higway for the 3 speed is 30MPG, the 4 speed is 33 MPG. Other than that a 98 Corolla with that low mileage would be a good choice. I don't remember if it has a timing belt or not.

1998 was the first year for the chain on the Corolla (Woo hoo).

Not sure about the Civic, but the Corolla is super easy to work on. Just replaced my intake manifold gasket this weekend & it was a breeze!!

How do I know if it's the 3 speed? No overdrive? Do I just take it up to 55mph and check RPM? Should be around 2,200rpm at 55 right? That's what my dad's 04 Corolla and the ol' camry ran at.

I found this description of the probable 1998 4 speed Corolla AT online:
A245E (1993-2007 Corolla) Gear ratios: 1st - 3.643:1 2nd - 2.008:1 3rd - 1.296:1 4th - 0.892:1 Rev - 2.977:1
(SOURCE: https://answers.yahoo.com/question/i...6064903AAutAc0)

So calculate the freeway RPMs for the tires and check a freeways speeds, at low light throttle and that will strongly suggest whether you have a four speed transmission. You could also accelerate watching for the shifts on the tachometer or using the butt-ometer built into the driver seats of all cars. Good luck

EDIT: I just realized the gear ratios I posted in this post do not include the final drive gear, so unless you can find that info, this won't help you. But counting the shifts and watching the tachometer will tell you and maybe that is easier.

Sorry about that, it's not always clear who you are talking with on a forum. Honest mistake.

As for 3-speed vs 4-speed auto, just pay attention to the number of times is shifts as you accelerate from a stop. You should be able to tell. Just don't mistake the converter locking up for a shift.

You will feel three shifts and then converter lockup. Tach shoulddrop some each time, assuming you have a tach.

Guys about the gender thing it's no big deal. Anyway, I give up. I went to look at 30+ Corolla's today and they were either junk or way to expensive... Couldn't find a SINGLE ECHO IN THE ENTIRE DAMN CITY. God what a horrible day... People are so Damn rude... Looks like I'm driving the camry to work right now, even though it really isn't in driving condition.
