The reason they made "vents" that weren't is a simple one. They wanted the looks, without making any more air dirty. They didn't need the vents, so they just blocked them from the rear.

Is this the generation of Mazda 6 you have? Seems like you could just cover the space with semi rigid plastic

I'm guessing that these are what you're talking about.
In which case, I join the not worth the time to dink with crowd.

I'm gonna say do it! If it gets you going and you learn something why not? Agreed that it will make little noticeable difference but it will make a small difference.

Then later tackle the stuff that makes a big difference like the wheels.

Many small changes add up to make a big change.

Thanks for the replies everyone, and yes that is the model/body style of 6 that I have. Ok, if the experts say it's not worth doing for FE, then when I get around to it I'll be doing it for aesthics I guess.

i say... it cant hurt. if you know how to take your bumper apart it should be easy. i agree with the clear duct tape suggestion or maybe the black duct tape.

at least if you go that route its reversible if you dont like the results. if it were i though, i would probably throw some fiberglass resin or bondo on it, sand smooth(to original contour), primer and paint flat black to maintain the clean stock look(no tape)

That would be my prefered method, I just wasn't sure how much weight the resin or bondo might add (I'd probably use the resin). We're talking about a rather small area either way, nothing that'd be noticable to the car overall, but I've always been fond of "adding lightness" to my cars.

You've got the same issues I have. Oversized openings that really serve no purpose.
Currently I have mine covered with cardboard and 200MPH Tape (red to match the car).
I am quite rather unsure of any benefit from it. I am thinking its time for a

Nascar'esque front bumper. Build it all outa aluminum angle, and then use some sheet metal over it, with a nice splitter on the bottom too.

I won't even get started on the wrap around rear bumper / wheel skirts idea... Lol!
