Hyundai Elantra transmission in an Accent

Hey guys,

I know that many people do 'beta swaps' which is swapping the 1.5L 'alpha' motor in their Hyundai Accent with a 2.0L 'beta' from a tiburon or elantra. I have read tid-bits of info from it and many people reuse the original accent transmission. This leads me to the idea that the transmissions must be very similar and i should be able to use an Elantra transmission on the accent and in theory have longer gearing for better gas mileage. Has anyone here heard of anyone doing or trying this? I get 40 mpg with no effort at all and have gotten as high as 45 mpg from a few tanks last summer with my 02 accent hatchback. wouldn't mind finding out where the limit is if i ever have to do the clutch on this thing (might as well do the transmission too!)

Just thinking out loud..

cheers
Marko

Dude, if you are getting that kind of mpg in your car right now, don't you dare touch it.

Just get a Scangauge and drive better.

I had a 2004 Elantra and the cruise rpm was too high for me. Used it for courier work and was bought new. The ratios were good in the city, but bad on the highway, at least to me.

I would max out the car as it sits with what you have first, then go next level on the hardware when you can't go further. Work on aerodynamic improvement, weight reduction. Change the tires to low rolling resistance style ( the best ones will give a big jump in mpg ). Synthetics in everything.

That car sounds like it's where it needs to be for right now.

yeah, when your transmission finally craps out (probably around 200K miles or more) then I'd say consider the swap. I don't think the weight savings of the beta would be worth the cost. It's worth it though to find out if it has a 5th gear that can be swapped in for better hwy cruising rpm's That could easily be done at clutch time.

You had me thinking that the other shoe to drop was putting the 1.5L in an Elantra, bigger, nicer, car with a smaller engine to get better MPG. Performance would suffer...greatly, I'm sure, but it would still get you where ever you'd wanna go at 40 MPG or better YMMV. I for one could care less about 0-60 if I was getting amazing mpgs. I drove a 1.6L Gas non-turbo 103HP Focus in Poland last summer, and it was r e a l l y s l o w. I didn't mind so much, what stunk was the 37MPG, I'd have thought it could do better. I didn't drive it as eco as I could have, but still. Anyways, that's my 2 ¢.

yea i would only swap the transmission or maybe even the 5th gear but i can't even find info on ratios and the ratios may even be the same on the cars based on what cleanspeed said.

... after another look, based on this site the elantra is even worse.. geez. nm this thought!

i did already get LRR kumho eco solus kr22 tires last fall, we'll see what the mileage does when it gets warmer out.

And they have the same final drive. Disappointing.

If either the 5th or final drive had been significantly different, I would have said: go for it! Be a pioneer, I would have said.

If you do a significant portion of your driving on the highway (top gear cruising), re-gearing is worth looking into. It gained me ~5% better fuel economy - Project 'nerd gear': taller tranny transplant nets +5.2% MPG - MetroMPG.com

I wish that Elantra I had had a 'nerd gear'. I bet they have a set for the world market models.
