A lot of people at school complain about gas prices they also happen to be the ones who drive like idiots and poke fun at cyclists. I guess people would rather complain than actually do something about it.

First Amendment to the United States Constitution: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion; or abridging the freedom to whine, or to press their whining on colleagues; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and pay through the nose for fuel at the corner station, and then to petition the Government for tax breaks to pay for their guzzlers.

See my car's mod & maintenance thread and my electric bicycle's thread for ongoing projects. I will rebuild Black and Green over decades as parts die, until it becomes a different car of roughly the same shape and color. My minimum fuel economy goal is 55 mpg while averaging posted speed limits. I generally top 60 mpg. See also my Honda manual transmission specs thread.

My close co-workers know that I hypermile but they wouldn't dare call me anything. If they did,I would just say 58 MPG on a whole tank. When you achieve that you can call me anything you want, and I will fill your tank as a reward!
Until then I just wish gas price could hit about 20$ a gallon WITHOUT effecting the price of anything else so I could laugh harder on all you giant V8 driving(for status symbol), jack rabbitting, tailgating, racing for red light morons

I would not try to convert anybody but I do keep them in check by making comments like " It's going to be a horrible MPG tank because my odometer just turned over 400 miles and my fuel gauge is already almost at the half tank mark"

Have fun with them and say gas IS cheap! What would they do if they had to pay European gas prices? ( And then add btw Europe is a continent and it is not in the USA just to be a smarta$$ )

Involuntary ignorance- what I call biological stupidity- is sad and pathetic, but there are those who try to maximize what they were given and I applaud that. What burns me up is willful ignorance (like sub-20 mpg getting long distance co-workers who disrespect resources and efficiency) and it is running rampant, and there are no signs of it slowing down.

Interesting thread to be sure.

Just recently the Australian dollar took a plunge from over US$1.03 to about US$0.94. As an immediate consequence the price of petrol (gas) shot from around AUS$1.18 or so to over $1.43 in about four days.

Naturally out of the woodwork come all the SUV owner begging "the goverment to do something!".

Aaaaggggghhhhhh.
Americans aren't the only whiners.

Peter.

Exactly. Humanity has done an astonishing job of insulating itself from the forces of nature that thin all the other herds. The unfortunate byproduct of such an easy existence is the proliferation of that which previously wouldn't have made it. This is how we end up with people that consciously chose to live in a climate that goes below freezing part of the year yet they warm up their SUVs 30 minutes before leaving the indoors ecosystems.

Hey, at least it's got electrolytes. It's what plants need!

I can't help it. I've been weird since birth. But I don't shut the engine off while coasting - that's a little too weird.
