I find talking cold hard cash saved tends to quieten them down. MPG tends to give them little other than raised eyebrows and a "jaysus!" look on their face. But when i say i spend 20 euro per week and get three weeks and 800 miles per tank they tend to listen. I even managed to get a co worker to start logging his (with huge wheels!) 520d mpg!
I carpooled with a lad once and he was very apprehensive about how long it would take to get to work. He also started logging his mpg when he saw that we got to work in more or less the same time!
Hypermiling is like a pink shirt. It takes a real man to wear it!

Heh--I'm not man enough to wear a pink shirt, so I think the bar for Hypermiling may be a little lower than that.

I've got the same with my brother-in-law. He doesn't make fun of me (at least that I know of), but each time he complains and I tell him what to do/not do it's like talking to a wall. First he whines about how much he's going to spend on gas when he goes on vacation, so I told him to leave earlier to miss the traffic and to take it slow. He comes back and complains about his fuel consumption, then he brags about driving 160 km/h (100mph) and being "the king of the road". After three years of me hypermiling and ecomodding he still claims that it doesn't work, but at the same time he wanted to borrow my car for the vacation trip because "it barely uses any fuel".
Same goes for other things, like the electricity bills. He whines about having to pay so much more than we do, yet turns a deaf ear to my energy saving tips. He dismisses my low bill saying that he has more people in the house, but doesn't understand that one extra person doesn't justify using 40% more electricity, especially since I'm the one who uses electricity to preheat the car's engine.
Sometimes, you have to keep your head high and keep fighting, because you just might win. But sometimes, you can just give up with no second thoughts.

People who actively attempt to fix problems they see usually complain very little.

My co workers have given up complaining about fuel prices in my presents. I suspect they are tired of the lectures on the price in a market is set by " what the market will bear " and variuse other quotes like " a fool and his money are soon parted ". they talk of government and industrie consereacies to rais fuel prices at which point I remind them that if they really believed what they said, they would be driving as little as posible and they would drive the most fuel efficiant vehicle they could. I rather enjoy these discusions...

People want to have their cake and eat it too. This is typical human behavior and is quite frustrating to the rationally-minded. I've often said that intelligence is a curse...
I get pretty good MPGs and don't drive at all like a grandma. I'm usually the fastest one off a line, in the fast lane on the highway, and arrive at my destination just about as fast as one could reasonably go. The only difference between my driving and any other person is that I anticipate traffic, look ahead at lights, memorize patterns, and do as much engine-on coasting as possible. Ok, that and a tiny bit of PnG. Oh, and I take corners at much higher speeds than most people.
I could surely get better MPGs, but I really don't want to sacrifice significant time to obtain it.
