I'll take a look again today but am 99% sure it said max 81 psi at 1450 lb load. The tires are snow rated "all weather" tires (different from all season) and cost me $225 a piece. They are also low rolling resistance and you can drive 40 mi on a flat on them...

They are not Truck/Van tires but since noticing the high sidewall max I starting looking at friends tires and know what you mean. My girlfriend has an 04 echo whos sidewall max is 40 psi but my friends flatbed mitsubishi fuso has max sidewall of 80 psi.

If the case is that the sidewall on my car tires is in fact 81 psi, is it reccomendable to go that high? It sounds somewhat dangerous...one bump and they would tear apart from the inside out or something. There must be some pressure (different for each tire) where it stops affecting the footprint to a noticable amount.

Anyone know where to buy a good gauge?

If the tyres are rated for the pressure and weight, they won't tear apart on a normal bump.

Run flat tyres are very sturdy.
And heavy.

I own Nokians and several of my family members and friends have 'em -- every single one has a sidewall max of 51 PSI. 81 PSI would be dangerous.

?????

Are you saying they are RunFlat tires? (or since you're from Vancouver - tyres?)

I just looked at Nokian's web site and while they do make Run Flat tires, I don't think the ones to fit your Regal are.

OK, here's the deal: Passenger car tires will have a max sidewall pressure of either 35 psi (or 36 if the tire is based on the metric system of measurements), 44 psi, or 51 psi - for all standard load tires. or 41 or 50 psi for Extra Load tires.

So if the tires in question are for your Regal, it does not make sense that they would say 81 psi max!

But it does make sense the the LT tires on the Muso say 80 psi max. That makes them Load Range E's - very appropriate for a light duty truck.

Before we go there, let's clear up what it actually says. There is some amount of quirkiness in this and it is important we start off with good info!

Do you have an exact model? Do you have a camera with a macro mode that can get a close-up shot of the offending verbiage?

Ok I checked again today. Sorry for the confusion about it. They do say 51 psi. The tires are a bit dirty and the writing is too damn small. They are run-flats and really good tires. Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice. I'm glad I double checked before filling them any more. Thank you.

My tires all say 35 psi recommended, and to not exceed 40 (or 44) psi.

How high of a pressure is safe to put in them?

geez i forgot about the chalk test hahaha been more then 15 yrs when i saw that and know i feel a bit old hahaha
so many topics to touch on as far as op i think you can increase tire pressure but as stated there are drawbacks ive seen a few tires separate. always ugly.
i believe there is alot of info on firestone and ford that was a blame game that said im a great fan of both i personally put 90k on the original recall tires on a f150 and ran them real hard the whole time.great discussion post for sure

This has been dicussed a lot on this site, some people think filling tires to (or beyond) the sidewall max is ok and gives you benifits in mileage. In your case it would be the 40 or 44 psi mentioned. I've personally held a section of tire that tore itself apart from overinflation when in riding school for motorcycles. I don't recommend going passed the sidewall max but at the same time a lot of people in the forum have. I'm keeping my tires to 5psi below sidewall max just in case. I'd rather be on the safe side than have one of my $225 tires blow apart and possibly kill myself...
