what do you need your car to do?
I would personally go for a Honda Insight, if you only do highway driving then look at a VW TDI Golf, only short city trips then look on Ebay at the electrics that are out there, to me a $10,000 budget is pretty big, my civic vx's were $1,200 each of them, my electric car was $3,500... most I've spent on anything other then my house.

Ive thought about a 318i, but they all have around 140k miles
Also Tdi's I would love, but they also all have around 150k miles (and even though thats not much on those engines, it is on everything else on the car (suspension, brakes, etc etc etc)).
I want a pretty reliable car that will run for many years to come, get great FE (and I WILL modify the crap out of it), and that is a great commuter car...

Both the base Versa and base Yaris are $9,990 around here. If your $10k limit doesn't include tax, it should be easy to get a new high-mileage car.

Get a Tempo, then you'll have $9,800 left over for fuel/expenses/mods.

How about the Ford's Zx3's? I have found a lot (with manual transmission, around 70k) for REALLY cheap. I mean like 3-4k.
I mean its either between the yaris and the zx3, the yaris being much more expensive.... opinions?

Well I'm also considering the mpg potential of each.
I know the yaris is better stock but the focus has much more aftermarket support so it might be easier to work on to get top Mpgs ... I just don't know anyone here have had both maybe?!
