The wheels are inset a little bit from the body, but these cars do have a larger turning radius that other cars from the same period.
Here's a picture that shows this a little better:
This is the longer Ambassador, but they are nearly the same car. The Statesman I showed is lowered and has the wheel skirts extended. This Ambassador appears stock and has a little more relief for the wheels and you can see how they are inset a bit.

This design actually predated the diesel electric locomotive.
The Thorne was Ohio built, while the Walker was built in Chicago. Same thing though.

The answer was the Wilson Pre Selector, which for an analog style control was a very effective way of changing gears. Used to great effect by Armstrong Siddely, Daimler and others.
