If you want something that runs a lean mixture and low EGT then you want a diesel.

What is in the water over there in Phoenix?

Oh wait.

You demand links, but have you provided any? You refer to things, like you expect us to do your research.

You are very selective when you use math.

And my 74 Chevy van which got 12 to 14MPG but it IS a Van and I normally drive fast..

NOW my newer cars get 29 MPG.

So take 30 MPG and get 3 times as much MPG and we are talking 90 MPG.

Seems possible to me.

What they did with old cars I cannot say.

Rich
Here is an example of me doing your research:

I see 16 - 22 MPG.

I am not a fan of V8s, so I needed to find a list of them. I used this: The Best V8 Sedans, but could not find any list of fuel-efficient V8s, just articles like this: Best 300 Horsepower Cars that Get 30 Miles Per Gallon

Those cars have four or six cylinders.

As others have explained, modern gasoline engines have a thermal efficiency of about forty percent, meaning sixty percent is turned into heat. I cannot find any V8s that get 80 MPG and it is literally impossible to triple that. You tell me how to get 120% of thermal efficiency. Are you drinking 240 proof vodka? The best I found was 22 MPG and if somehow you designed an impossible system that burned, but did not warm up, that Audi would get 55 MPG, or 61.1% of 90.

My suburban with 4.10 gears, 454 engine and 3 speed transmission was getting close to what those cars were getting. When I started it was getting 6mpg, I figured I would only be able get 10 or 12 but did better than that.

Since I don't hide anything or have secret technology I will tell you precisely how I did it.

Wide band oxygen sensor meter so I could run a real lean tune around 16.5:1 air/fuel. Replaced the quadrajet with a edelbrock 650 only and edelbrock air gap intake manifold. Because I know how to tune and have to tuning kit for the edelbrock carb. Thermostadic intake and EOC.
Timing curve was stock profile, advaced 4 degrees beyond the factory recommend base advance.
I have posts going into great detail on all these mods.
Was getting 12 to 13 in town and as high as 16 to 18 on the highway.
New suburbans with much smaller 6L engines, OD transmissions and aerodynamics don't even do that well.
I figured I would be lucky to get double digits in town and 12 to no more than 14 on the highway.

Interesting. I was able to tune both the Quadajet and the old AFB (what Edelbrock calls a Performer) decades ago, and had a AFB Tunering kit..

I felt the Quad with its SMALLER primaries had a bigger chance for higher MPG and tried tuning it for lean burning by smaller main jets and three stage metering rods.

Sadly I did not have a A/F ratio meter so could not see what I was doing.

In timing do you mean just the timing curve as in base timing without advance or the advance timing its self or cam timing??

Not sure what you mean with Thermostadic intake and EOC. Please explain.

As for newer cars and trucks, it is funny how MPG is going down on these...

I think it is on purpose.

Rich

The MPG have gone down because of the emissions systems and a crapton of safety equipment. Also the measurement of MPG has changed.
