modding a 3rd gen firebird (title change due to free aero)
Here are a couple of pics I found on the web.
Not perfect side shots, but it should serve for the discussion to follow.
As you can see, it slopes too quickly. It also has a very sexy back glass
What if:
What if I raised the glass up closer to the template, and built sides and a new front seal on it?
The short piece of metal aft of the glass would have to be reworked to match the glass angle.
The car is 192" long, 16 feet. I think it would be fine at 18 feet long, so you see where this is going. Lift hatch up, reconfigure and seal. pull tail lights and extend body, re-attach tail lights.
Cd is .34 as it came.
Why would you I want to do this? It has a decent frontal area, comfortable seats, and a suspension that can handle the weight of a 4bd1t isuzu turbo diesel!
I have a line on the engine for relatively cheap. It weighs in at 750 pounds, which knocks the snot out of light car suspensions.
It also has a low fuel specific.

The #1 item of bi-wing is a real stretch. I just sort of like the idea for this sort of car.
Bi-Wing:
Merkur XR4Ti - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Maybe add some rakes to the rear glass (see below). Although I don't think it will spill much vortex air as much as other cars with square canopies.
EDIT...........cannot forget the template.

Big thanks man. Love your work.
I was thinking about lifting that back hatch up till it got with the template. I can move hinges and seals as needed.
The light covers, chin spoiler, side skirts would be sterling ideas as well.

If you are willing to do major bodywork, chop the top at the B pillar. That would decrease frontal area while lowering the angle of both the windshield and the back glass. Raising the trailing edge of the back glass would bring it closer to the template but would require more length, as you have noted.

Yeah, I can't do that. I am only 6'2" but my legs are short and my torso is LOOOOOONG. Chopped top = reclining seating = discomfort on the long haul.
I did look at cowl induction hoods to help with the windshield issue, at least for 1/3rd of the width.
I can manage the hatch work, it is not too involved. Not really a body man here. I can also blend in an extension in length and relocate the tail lights. The biggest trick will be the metal edge of the hatch lid, getting that cut off and moved neatly.
I'd use the extra length to do what I do with a car, work the heck out of it. My poor camry seats are never up, almost always one or the other is folded for hauling lumber, etc.

I seem to remember quite a few aero mods that people have done to the camaro.
one was the transam wrap around wing. if I remember correctly it was the perfect height to match the roof line angle.
people also do aero headlight mods
if you were really into bodywork some people have gone nutz. and theres also many fiberglass pieces and extended noses for racing.
im sure these have seen improvements.
ditch the hatch and go with 09 mustang rear window
Rear bumper face lift on my Camaro - Fiberglass Forums
not really my style but it just shows how much you can do
if it was me ide swap the nose from a firebird of same gen. as camaro was .31cd and firebird was .28 in its prime
and this was one of the best.
one reason I suggested the wing. its used on top speed builds..

Kach just posted an edit showing the Camaro under the template and it's not too bad. If anything, add some length to the trunklid so it meets the template and call it good. If you are not a bodyman, anything else is a can of worms. KISS (no insult intended)

I plan to at least do under body aero mods and do something about the front head light "scoops".
I like the hatch delete, since I got the suburban I havent tried to open the camaros' hatch more than once or twice since 2007.
I would like to do a lexan rear glass.

Any merit to this idea at all?
