The green machine - '94 Geo Metro

I'd be surprise if it lasted any less. Back in 1990 when i bought my first Geo new i towed two jet skis i raced all around the west coast and never even burnt up a clutch and i just sold that car two years ago. This car has been built with this in mine I did install the 4 cylinder fly wheel and clutch kit which must have at least twice the surface area. I use to have a tow rope in my back seat and i would make the next guy wanting to use the boat ramp give me a pull out if he wanted to launch or retrieve his boat on steep ramps. Its not really working all that hard gong down the free way. i must have a 1000 miles towing with it or more now. the big hurtle was the suspension moving all over the place when turning tigh corners or coming off a freeway and going to the left at agood speed the car behind would push the ass end a bit and at first it would make your star fish pucker a bit but i got use to that. then i fixed by adding in two sets of rubber springs lifts on each wheel and my new tires are rated at 100 mph with no air they are amazing. they look like thy came off a fork lift with solid tires. they grip in rain or shine so well the slide is gone and now the car doesn't roll or twist on teh springs. to be able to travel 300 400 miles at 50 plus mpg and then get half or better towing home its just money in my pocket. as far as trans axle there cheap i can buy one on the money i save on almost every trip i make.

i am standing beside myself

...."my new tires are rated at 100 mph with no air"...

so
you have not mentioned a wheel upgrade , which means you are using
12" steel wheels with 10mm studs to fasten the 12" steel wheels to the car .

which must mean that ;
you have found a source for 12" run flats ? perhaps you would be kind enough to share with us that source as many metro users are always asking where to find quality 12" tires

most run flats can be driven for 100 miles with no air , but not at 100 mph .

do
continue

Silverstone Rallye S525 Tyres is the link i raced this tires for years. if you take all the air out of them on geo the car is so light you can barley tell if at all. in fact you can not tell if they have air by looking at them on the car. there not cheap and there not DOT rated there a full race tire from Malaysia and they are the FIA world rally tire. So a 550 hp soob or focus can run full out with a hole in the tire. traction is amazing in fast car or a truck.

also I'm using Nissan altima rims. i believe the 93 to 04 model. the trick to the install for the 10 mm studs is a washer. I'll post a video picture of how i do it. its easy and simple and i have been using this method for the street and race 15 years at least. I buy the stainless washers at lowes that fit over the 10 mm studs i cant remember what size the hole is but they fit pretty decent. then I just take antisieze and my impact gun and run the lug nuts down to fully compress the washer a couple times and you will see the washer takes a perfect form of the nut and rim hole. then I just torque them like normal. Its not like flattening a penny because its not squishing the metal or stretching it just shaping it to the curve. you can use them over and over once you make them and they keep there form perfectly.

I also never balance tires with weights I always add centrifugal balancing beads when mounting the tires to make sure there perfect at every speed. Nothing is as smooth as beads. if you don't have a tire machine just let the air out of a tire and collapse the bead on the short side and just pour in a beer cup full of air soft plastic beads wally world has the best price on a 10,000 round package. then tear of the weights with pliers and fill the tire with air and your done for ever. The tire stores sell sand you can pour through the valve stem like semi trucks have but its expensive.

Its just like when your running your 4x4 and you put golf balls in the tires so if you rip off a tires tread on a bigger mudder you can still drive home with out shaking the truck to death from the tire out of balance. the golf balls go right up where there needed and it just like you didn't lose a few ounces (28 grams per once i think) of tread 15' from the center of the rim. Just remember that 7 grams of weight at 2000 rpm 4" from the center of a spinning shaft is 7 lbs. that's why you balance tires and engines. every gram is 1 lb of weight and it only get worse as the shaft spins faster.

show me

there is one of my snow tires Nokian Hakkapalita , mounted an an Acura Legend alloy rim from the late 8os to early 90s , balanced on a real wheel balancer .
on a G10 geo metro - wheel fastener torque
45 ftlbs thread 12 mm x 1.25
i would never consider driving around with no air in the tire , in fact in the winter i was running them at 50 psi
i would never consider towing anything with this car even with this tire and wheel setup -
i showed you mine - now show me yours

some other
wheels that fit Geo Metro

Well one advantage you have is you have 12mm studs. but for those that have pre 95 cars we have to make adapters to put on the Acura or Nissan rims. Thats my washer bending trick. you shouldn't just say you would never tow like your a autority on the matter it messes with people later that might need to or want to tow. just because you don't want doesn't mean you cant. lets not forget the car is rated for 100lbs of tongue weight and 1000lb trailer.

What you may not be understanding is that the car tows a trailer that weighs much more very well. But when your flat towing a car with a tow bar the towed car has a bit of a push in a tight sharp turn that is created by the towing cars ass end swinging and the towed car still being in a straight line. until the wheel is forced in the towed car to turn it can cause the rear tires of the towing car to slide if the towing cars is not heavy enough. For this reason the standard is to have the towing car be 600lbs heavier than the towed car. This is to add a bit more friction to the ground so the car can not be pushed around but it does not cure the problem. trailers do not have this as you are pulling the tongue around and that is the steering wheel for the trailer. on the towed car you pull on the front of the car until the wheel decide to be forced into the turn.
The cure is stiffer suspension and better tires having the tow bar at the correct angle of level.
i did not say i drive around with no tire pressure i run 50 psi myself i said the tires are rated for 100mph at 0 pressure and that you can not tell on these tires if they actually have air in them or not in the Geo as the car is so light and it hasn't enough power to really work them like a rally car would.
Looks like were doing about the same thing your just doing it in a 95 or newer model. Ive never had much luck getting the really good gas mileage out of the post 94 models what are you getting for a average. here is a video of the tires on the car and my balls hanging out in the breeze. I'll have to shoot some of the spacer washers i make for the rims.

I'm done with this thread i just read it again. (Done with a real wheel balancer). here i try and show or help a guy do a trick he can pull off at home and end up with some thing that actually works better. And you just take shots at me? Your a dick and if this was my web site i would boot your ass off for acting like an ass.

There are two reasons why I'm skeptical of heavy towing with Metros:

One is, as noted, the towed pushes the tow-er around. Not good.

The second is, Metro transmissions are barely strong enough to withstand normal single-occupant commuter duty, much less pull around lots of weight while pumping more than stock horsepower through them. Metros are RARE in the yards around here, so no it is not a matter of running to a yard on Saturday with a few bucks to get another transmission.
