Tesla is supposed to start making ventilators. Volkswagen will, too.

Can you imagine fighting for your life and seeing a Fiat logo on your ventilator?

The auto industry had been looking for excuses to sell more cars or slow down. There was a GM union labor dispute in MI last year. I hear it was negotiated to shut down production for a week and make it look like the union won when really both the union and corporate got exactly what they needed.

If your ventilator says "fiat" then you'll both have something in common. Both you and your machine are struggling to stay alive.

...and you need to be bailed out?

I love that auto manufacturers are switching to making ventilators. That cannot be easy or cheap.

This site says that ventilators for ICUs cost $25,000 - 50,000: High-Acuity Ventilator Cost Guide

The U.S. has about 200,000 ventilators and 135,000 respiratory therapists to run them. WebM.D. says that we may need up to 960,000 ventilators. U.S. May Not Have Enough Ventilators for COVID-19

Of course, these are international corporations, and this is a global pandemic, but how many countries can afford these? This post starts out saying that ventilators are available, but hospitals cannot afford them, but then says that hospitals aren't buying more because this is only a temporary spike: More lifesaving ventilators are available. Hospitals can’t afford them.

Quote:
As a Stanford postdoc a decade ago, Matt Callaghan created the designs for a streamlined, low-cost ventilator that hospitals could stockpile, to prepare for the possibility of a global pandemic.

But when he went on to cofound a company, One Breath, he and colleagues determined that the immediate need was producing cheaper ventilators for critical care in the developing world, where chronic respiratory illnesses are among the leading causes of death.

The company raised several million dollars, set up manufacturing in Southeast Asia, and finally expected to begin production for its initial markets within the next 12 months.
We need more ventilators. Here’s what it will take to get them.

Jimmy Dore: Government Building Field Hospitals To Handle Pandemic

This is in King County [Seattle] where my son is sick but still working the weekend.

'1/3 of cases in NYC'

Scott Adams needs to get out more.

He takes a call and they speculate about why there are not more cases in Russia
. They speculate without knowledge about the Russia/China border and I stopped listening when they agreed their both Communist countries. Seriously? That's so 1980s.

At least here we know the order in which countries closed their borders. Although I still don't know about Madagascar. I heard they've 32 cases.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ says 3 cases in Madagascar.

That is just reported cases.
Iceland is hardly representative, but they did test on a random sample of their inhabitants and found many people who were infected but did not show symptoms. Even of those who did show symptoms many were not (yet) tested for that reason.

So I guess there's easily over a million people infected worldwide already, even if there are 'only' 303,196 confirmed cases right now.

Since this looks like it started sometime in October 2019, Millions are probably infected. It was out and spreading way before the Chinese government officially admitted to a problem.
