Someone in a beat up old civic wagon probably stock was behind me today. I jumped a lane left and he went into the exit lane I was slowing down and he was waving with a big thumbs up.
Most people look angry when they see my car. It was a nice change.

We need to get together and start a "crappy car museum". You can find/purchase/curate the collection and I'll write the placards and design the interior!

During Monterey Car Week, the LeMons people hold their own Concours d'LeMons. Might be a reasonable place to show off to some like-minded folks...
Hey, Sven, there's even one in your state!!

Driving down the road today I saw a car show going on and decided to check it out. The show was put on by a local Mustang owners club.
Walking through the cars I spotted this...
1975 Ford Mustang II MPG Hatchback
He purchased it new when he was 18. Unfortunately, I was only able to talk to the owner for a moment as they were starting to have the award meeting. He did say that the "MPG" model was only available in 1975 as a option and that it had a lower rear end ratio.
edit: 3.18:1 rear-axle ratio (standard was 3.40:1)
According to what I can find on the web.
Quote:
The net effect was that, by the mid-1970s, performance was measured by fuel economy, not horsepower, in cars of this size. Ford even introduced an Mustang II MPG model with the kind of fanfare with which they just introduced the 2011s. The 2.3L 90hp 2700-lb car was rated at 34mpg highway, 26 city. Those are still decent numbers (though in reality you’d get no more than 29-30), good as nearly anything at the time.

Your getting soft in your old age...
However, I can see why.
40 years and several (model) generations later. The MPG is the same for the 1975 as a 2014.
1975 - 23 mpg city and 34 highway (unrevised EPA)
2014 - MPG: Up to 19 city, 31 highway
Performance is up of coarse but so is the price, nearly 6 times.
$3,800 compared to $22,500 (base)
>
Makes one wonder what it would do with a 5 speed OD, rv cam, LRR tires and 2.73's in the rear end...

Inflation-adjusted, the actual price in old-timey dollars is probably around the same. And the new Mustang will kick the II's butt five ways to Sunday in any measure of performance or safety.
But, of course, there's a whole lot less to go wrong on an old car like that. And I kinda like the II. It's one of those cars that unfairly got the short shrift. And an MPG variant? Can you imagine showing up in one of those at an All-Mustang show?

Didn't they make a Pinto MPG of the same era? I swear I have seen one somewhere.

The wife and I went to the movies the other night in her '14 Mirage, and when we got back to the car there was a 1st gen insight parked next to us. It was so cool seeing the car we love and the car we lust after together.
