If I don't put sensitive data on my PC, and I have backups, why do I care about security. Also, everything is behind the firewall.

Most people aren't compromised because they didn't get last weeks security update, they are compromised because they foolishly installed malicious software or voluntarily divulged their information to a bad actor, or someone else who mishandled their information.

If I don't have credit cards, or trade stocks, why am I so indignant about my medical records[?]

The Raspberry Pi doesn't have a real-time clock and updates choke even after I reset it manually. But I can image a $15 microSD card and start fresh.

There are places on Internet I just don't go because I don't have a chain of VPNs. I hear seven is a good number.

I don't have any idea where one could go where they would need one VPN, let alone over half a dozen.

I am sure those aren't searchable with normal engines.

Well, I'm not telling. There are protocol levels above the traditional TCP/IP stack.

Afaik, even 7 would be tracked but it would be slow. Side benefit is the net never forgetting anything

I'm going to side with freebeard on paranoia this time.

You think the government cares about the facts if you somehow end up in their sights? You think a jury of your peers cares about facts either?

Andrew Klavan mentions how, as a writer, he looks up horrific things in his research for a novel. Like details on how a particular crime would be committed. If he were ever accused of something, those search terms would not look good.

I've looked for details on an interesting story I'm reading or hearing about, and those search terms wouldn't look good. Right now the Boston Bombers are on Netflix, and I have a curiosity about how the particulars of anything work. How good would it look if I am accused of something, have a prison history related to blowing up portable toilets in high school, and then look up how a pressure cooker bomb works? 12 jurors don't need any more evidence than that, and prosecutors only care about making convictions, not discovering truth.

... the common public have this impression that defense attorneys are scoundrels because they defend guilty people. They are scoundrels because they are attorneys, but that aside, they are necessary because the prosecution trumps up charges, mischaracterizes people, and has no interest in the circumstances or understanding the situation.

AFAIK there are some Linux distributions which have a layout quite similar to Windows, so I wouldn't hold my breath for folks resorting to an impoverished version of Windows instead. Not to mention there are some emulators to enable softwares developed for Windows to run on Linux.

An informed decision would include consideration of liicensing and architecture.

Linux is free and Open Source, Windows is proprietary. The User Experience is independent of the OS,

Breaking Windows can't be as utile as a stable release of a Linux distro.

For comparison Asahi Linux has been upstreamed into the Linux kernel.

18 Jul 2022At this point, Asahi Linux is usable as a basic Linux desktop (without GPU acceleration)! The ground had been shifting until now, but we're seeing drivers settle down. Let's take a look at what's been going on. Linux drivers galore Earlier this year we saw the absolute lowest level drivers being merged into the kernel. ...

You guys are weird. I don't like Windows, but it works--usually.

Saying that Linux is better for general use than a slim version of Windows is like saying vegan food tastes the best.

Linus pointed out that Atlas removes Defender, but you can install third-party virus scanners.
