i'm using a well worn lenovo R61i laptop from 2007 pentium dual-core 4gb ram. I bought it at a now defunct computer store used around 2015. I also have other computers but i use this one because it is familiar and always dependable. its very used & on its second keyboard and parts of the plastic case are worn smooth. it doesnt have a touch pad which helps prevent others from using it lol

Don't know if I mentioned this already; the Wife's x1 Carbon from 2014 is still going strong. It should, since I paid about $1,200 for it (she was starting a medical program at OHSU). Still, always impressed when a laptop lives a decade of daily use.
My $280 Intel i5 laptop from 2010 is very dead. My cost per year was still less.
Looking to replace my laptop this Black Friday for whatever is the most affordable 14 or 15" with Thunderbolt, so I can use my 3-monitor docking port.
I'm simultaneously building a new desktop rig to run Plex, BlueIris, file server, and VR gaming rig. Need to find a mobo, RAM, and Intel CPU this Black Friday or Cyber Monday. Intel's major update just dropped a few weeks ago, so the deals on that are sparse.

I'm surrounded (four computers) --the oldest is an iMac from Nextstep Recycling. I forget the year (2012-2016?) but it was $75.
The newest is a 8Gb Raspberry Pi 5 that was $160 at the local Best Buy. It shares a Roku TV with the Raspberry Pi 4. The new accessory I want to get is their $60 touch screen. It uses a DVI port so the Pi 5 can have (2) 4K monitors, a touch pad and a webcam.
Edit: and a USB microscope. Why the heck not?

Sometimes I miss how Windows XP seemed to be much more user-friendly than some newer versions of Windows.

We're way past user-friendly
They use your processor to screenshot, parse and compress a record of everything you do and ship it off to the cloud.

My web traffic numbers going through the PIhole interface doesn't support your comment about compression spying. Could be web addresses, but isn't mega data.

That's all second hand (J. Cristina, Rob Braxman), I've never personally run Windows.

I've been basically surrounded by Windows since I was a toddler. Would only have a computer at home when I was 6, but my maternal grandfather already used computers in his office (he worked as a law attorney after being retired by Brazilian Navy, but AFAIK he is no longer working after he moved from Manaus to Florianópolis last year). OTOH an uncle from my father's side, who has been into computers since his teenage years, has always been more favorable to Linux and Mac.
I wish KaiOS would release a desktop version of their OS, originally meant for affordable cellphones.

Didn't have windows saturation until 1990, so either you were mainframe or retired by then. Perhaps Oracle. Been too long to recall details.

My first paid job was replacing terminals with x486 PCs running Windows NT 4.0. That coincided with my parents getting a Win95 PC and top of the consumer line of hardware. Most households didn't have a PC back then. The internet says 50% of households had at least 1 computer in 2000. Now, 96% of households have one.
