Here is the one on my 86 vw. A standard Garmin Fortrex 101 with a switched power supply. I have been keeping it in direction speed and trip odometer and have several other screens.

My standard Odometer is broken and the tach doesn't work after the owner installed a new alternator without a W terminal.

Heh, I have a Garmin Foretrex 101 on my bicycle. The most annoying thing about it is swapping out the batteries. Your SMPS solution is a better one. Though I bet you could get away with a linear regulator instead. The Foretrex doesn't draw much current.

I agree... I had not used my Fortrex for years as I thought that the battery was too short lived for even bicycling. I didn't consider using it at first because of the battery issue and was going to purchase a specific car unit but the then thought why don't I investigate a regulated voltage supply and use my old but functional Fortrex. The Fortrex was not modified in any way and could be used with the wrist strap and batteries almost instantly.

I chose a ka317 regulator. My build thread was here: http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...elp-15135.html

I was an electronics technician for 5 years about 40 years ago and still do little projects.
Thanks.

a little high-tech; mostly cobbled together

1 Electric brake booster override
2 Highbeam switch (moved from floor switch which conflicted with using parking brake and clutch - also changed to use high and low beam simultaneously)*
3 Luxeon LED DRL/ driving lights
4 While doing all these changes, I accidentally broke the needle off the speedometer. Replaced with a sewing needle stuck into a matchstick
5 Voltmeter
6 Glow plug manual controller
7 Alternator disconnect (no longer used, as alternator has been removed)
8 GPS (with real time traffic avoidance)
9 Fuel log and note system
10 Electric brake controller (for towing)
11 Solar panel
12 A/C
13 iPod hiding place (connected to stereo behind dash, and is controlled directly by stereo faceplate)
14 Engine kill switch
15 Engine start
*As soon as I get around to it, I plan to reuse the floor switch to activate an "AOooOGA" style horn

I recently gave my girlfriend's friend a ride, who was very impressed that I have a bracket on the roof to hold a broom, but didn't seem to notice anything else.

Take that as a compliment! It shows how well integrated everything is

I stole the idea from somebody here, don;'t remember who. It makes EOC SO MUCH EASIER!!!!

Hmm, thats actually a nice way to think of it. Thank you.
Still, you'd think that EOC would leave at least a little impression, what with a big 6.9L diesel V8 cutting out and starting up again

The camera lies. It looks like cheap plastic IRL. However, the block that the kill and start switches are mounted in is real wood. It's held to the shift column with a bracket I made by cutting a tin can lid to shape.
