The other part of the problem is talking about serious issues - politics being but one of many - over the internet. Without the subtleties of intonation and body language, it’s easy both to convey the wrong intent and to misinterpret intent. Layer onto that the relative anonymity, and boom! It’s no wonder we’ve kinda gone off the rails. Political discourse is a great example of how the richness of the internet and social media has actually turned important public discussions into low-resolution caricatures of mature discussion, home to a lot of bomb-throwing rhetoric, tribalism, and vitriolic rancor.

I hate when my friends make the news! African American GOP legislator draws sharp criticism after calling Black Lives Matter "terrorist" group
I keep seeing that he served in the Army for 21 years, but nobody specifies that he retired. They keep saying that he was a Sergeant.
What kind? E5?! Command Sergeant Major of the Army?!
I did read that he was a tank commander and sexual assault specialist.
Oops! sexual assault prevention specialist.
I am sure that the rednecks love having someone that doesn't look like them saying how they feel [with bigger words than they could put together].

I love whenever someone uses critical reasoning skills to speak instead of sticking to a script, regardless of what they look like.

That’s where podcasting is really a shining spot. It’s the only place I have found the kind of civil discussion with room and time for nuance. The fact that when I was more engaged with political talk online, I could befuddle or anger both lefties and righties with the same statement was so frustrating that finding folks like Rogan or Thaddeus Russell, to name a few, was to stand under Havasu Falls after the long desert hike to get there.

Internet and social media are different things. Agreed social media is corrosive; it's time to switch Section 230.
Internet also encompasses free and open-source software. That's where real magic lies, read Richard Stallman ( Free Software Foundation) and Eric S. Raymond ( The Cathedral and the Bazaar)

I’m out of my element there. For someone who was born and raised in Silicon Valley, I sure have an awful curse when it comes to tech.

Me too... the latest one with Eric Weinstein. He's among my favorite thinkers on the left, along with Sam Harris. I'm sure both are cancelled several times over.

Eric’s podcast is on my must-listen list. Although putting him on the left would insence him, it would be too low-resolution. Bret’s good too, but he doesn’t have a podcast. I’m doing the episode with the Sopranos guys now, Bret is next.
Sam Harris is smart and usually correct, but he’s kind of the Hannity of the left: so dry and humorless that I just can’t do it.
So I’m kinda left with Rogan and Thaddeus Russell. I’ve tried some others who didn’t pan out. I keep another in my pocket for nerds who are both libertarian and like philosophy.
