43mpg? That's crazy. I've thought of larger tires, but the lack of low-range is holding me back. 1st gear is barely low enough sometimes with a full car in the snow & getting to camp sites. Any ideas on 14" or 15" skinny rims with the 4x140 bolt pattern? Or maybe I could run some 155/80-15's on the temporary spare rims...

Amazing economy. I would think the pass would improve MPG on a manual trans. My Su always got the best when doing mountain climbing when I could coast down the back side. I averaged 28mpg in my Legacy, but would get 34 when spending a lot of time in the mountains.

If the larger tires helped significantly, that means the vehicle was over-geared greatly. Typically, the aero hit from larger tires and a lift would more than offset the gains from the taller gearing.

Welcome USMB guy! I havent posted there in a while.
I'd also recommend a grill block and LRR tires when season comes around again.

these are overgeared pretty high.
my 98 outback w/ manual was a steady 3300rpm at our hwy speeds of 70mph.
the engine in the OB (2.5L boxster) could easily handle much lower rpm.
