Georges Jean Raymond Pompidou had no science or mathematical training. His lack of technological training eliminates him from knowing the benefits of science, mathematics, technology, & an advanced society.

I met many people from Central America that did not believe that knowing how to read and write was important.

How Important is Technology in Education

......we find that children who have basic computer literacy and are aware about fundamentals of technology, perform better in their college and graduation years. It is a misconception that technology should only be studied by students who are studying technology related subjects. .....while a computer science engineering student needs to be aware of computer programming, an art student is not expected to know computer programming but certainly the art student has to be aware about using computers easily.

Technology is: (a) knowing the difference between a shoe and a hammer and then (b) knowing how to use the shoe when no hammer is available.

Yup.

The internet has given us several generations of instant "experts" with encyclopedic knowledge of any topic, given the time and bandwidth required to look them up. (Guilty as charged. But then my motoring life began in the club forums when we enthusiasts went digital all those years ago...)

The difference between the knowledgeable and the wise is knowing how to filter and use all that information.

What's nice about forums like these is that they act as an arena in which said information can be processed and analyzed. And there are people here whose experience and unique personal knowledge enrich the discussion greatly.

I can honestly say I've learned a hell of a lot from you guys. Which is why I stick around despite having a few other sites to moderate and discuss in.

While the discussion can sometimes get contentious, I've always found the debate reasonably civil compared to the rabble filling most other motoring forums.

Pour et contre

It's worth reading his full bio. For someone who didn't like science and technology a lot of what he did included those things - the TGV, the Nuclear power program etc...

Glad we're all friends though

Off the top of my head, I can think of a few threads in the last month or so that have gone way off the rails and degenerated into useless bickering and personal insults (not even the veiled kind!).

I can also think of a few users who are generally useless and confrontational -- who only contribute negative noise, not signal. (We also have the useful and confrontational kind... barely easier to tolerate ... you know who you are.)

This is sure true.

That said, Tim (Daox) and I would be more than happy if regular members (non-moderators/non-admins) are willing to speak up and offer a gentle reminder that personal insults are verboten as a condition of membership here... civility is expected.

Can't speak for Tim, but I don't read every thread. And very occasionally, by the time I do get to a thread, it has already gone down the tubes.

I keep wanting to pretend to be confrontational, but I just do not have it in me.

Ha! For me, anything even remotely confrontational just ends up being sarcastic or tongue in cheek! I guess I just don't have it in me either to really confront on a non-productive basis.
