turning off 3 cylinders on Ford 300 I6
I want to disable the rear 3 cylinders on my truck. I fugure I can just cut power to the injectors for those 3 cylinders. Would this work? Let's throw out ideas.

I'd guess the firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4, so that would cut the 5, 6, and 4.
However, what about the valves? Have a way to keep the exhaust valve open so you're not wasting energy compressing the air and such?

Unless you can either keep the exhaust valve open all the time, or both valves closed all the time, on the disabled cylinders, you'll lose power, but gain little to no mpg, as you won't save yourself much in the way of pumping losses.
Even better would be a way to alternate which cylinders fire, so that a selectable number (3, 4, 5 or 6) can fire on each cycle, randomly alternating to keep wear even.

that would be a nightmare.....I might just try three and see what happens. I like the way it sounds like a 3 cyl diesel. Maybe just pull off the injector connectors on those three and try it?

At least also pull the sparkplugs... make it a permanent 3-cyl, I suppose. But you're not having to deal with pumping air through the intake/exhaust that way.

Hmm...this sounds familiar. Cadillac tried this back around 1980 with the V8-6-4. The combined engineering might of GM and Eaton Corp. managed to produce engines which broke down so frequently that they were replaced with 'normal' v8's under warranty.
If it were simple to do...

just tried it. I pulled the plug wires off because I couldn't get to the injector connectors without some trouble. I doesn't sound like my brother's at all on three cylinders. My brother ran his on three cylinders and it sounded like a kubota.(he had three wires disconnected) Mine sounds muffled. Could it be my timing is too advanced for only 3 cylinders?(14° BASE) You can tell it is working to pump air too. If I did pull the plugs, I would need some way of keeping dirt out of the cylinders. Breather filters? Not sure if I want to mess with it if I have to pull the plugs as I need 6 cylinder power on tap for hauling.

maybe i'll talk to my brother and see if he would want to try it on his truck since he needs new rings and gaskets anyway...just pull the pushrods and disconnect the injectors, pull the plug wires/plugs and install breather filters in the plug holes. I'll see if he bites.

if the injectors are still on you are just dumping fuel out the tail pipe. disable fuel flow and it might work.
