Very nice work. From mid 50s up to about 80. About a 45% improvement. Few of us do that well.

Better gearing lets your engine reap the rewards of less aero road load. Unless you operate in very hilly country (doesn't sound hilly with a55 MPG base) the MPG effect of weight difference is not overly significant.

The way I see it, it would be safer to get free wheeling on demand (just as a clutch on a bike).
But then it would no longer be automatic.

For a while I had a geriatric Yamaha 7n (I think that was what it was called) fitted with a bonkers combination centrifugal and overrunning clutch. Let up the gas while in gear, it declutched. It never surprised me at all, made it super easy to just ride the bike in nothing but pulse-and-glide mode. buuuuzzzzz-hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, buuzzzzzzzz-hmmmm-buzzzzzz-hmmmmmmmmmm.


It didn't upset the bike's handling in turns, but considering it was a pretty lightweight bike, it wasn't pushing hard in turns in the first place. The Burgman isn't a canyon carver either. It might not be an issue.

Ho, sure, I agree you can live with it but a bike manufacturer is sueable hence a less then optimal setup FE wise but 100% safe

thats for sure!

i know the free-wheel from the trabant and wartburg, east german 2 stroke cars. and i loved the all-gear-free box in the wartburg most. and 4 the scooter with vario and without fuel-cut, it would be the best deal. and it could fit into the outgoing shaft...

free wheeling on demand would be ok for me, but the clutch is turning and there is nowhere to link a thing.
my uc125 is going from engine brake to free wheel at about 20km/h. suddenly. if there is a safty issue, it is allready there. a total free wheel is better than that.
