Winglets stop air "bleeding" around the end of the wing IIRC. The tail is a different problem and the Kamm tail is as good as it gets short of being there .

That's pretty much what the Kamm, or truncated tail, is doing. It's establishing proper flow but not continuing it completely. Once the flow pattern is established it will continue in it's same pattern for the most part.

Look at the MotoCzysz electric cycle, and it's unusual aerodynamics - http://motoczysz.com/news/article/is...otorcycle_ever

They are using wings and fins to do what you are talking about.

I'm not going to be done in time for VMD in Ohio and considering the possibility of not bringing the bike. If I do then it will just be a static display, but one with good potential. Might be interesting to look at and for others to see what could be possible. I certainly have learned some things along the way and will do several things differently next time. (Oh heck no! this is not just a one time thing. I've got a few more scooters that will get transformed.)

I really would like it to be done to the point where I could ride it up to the pavilion where others will be displayed. I don't want to have to push it there since it is a long way from the campground and it is sure to be hot as blazes. But right now it's a tangled mess where things were taken off the frame to narrow it some and make room for the fairing.

Folks might be interested in how it is being built it since it is getting done with carbon fiber in the process. (my first ever experience with composites) It will look somewhat better than the pics here with the cleco fasteners bristling all over. (they will be replaced with pop rivets and then covered with duct tape, Ughhh! but then later will be replaced with reflective tape when it is finished.)
If I get a chance, (and that is a big if) I'll try to get a notebook or some such with some pictures of the build process thus far. It's good to share ideas for inspiration. The Vetter site inspired me so.....

I'm sure we can get enough man power together to to get your bike back and forth from the campground if you want to bring it along for display.
.
I am racing the clock myself. The skeleton of my new tail is ready for primer tomorrow, skin and hinges tomorrow night, lights on Tuesday night. I hope I get some sleep along with the work. It will be still ugly, a mishmash of primer green, primer tan, and pink foam. But it has to be road ready or I will be taking the car. It is a long ride Thursday, 470 miles, and I have to get in before the ticket window closes at 5:00.

I can probably talk to the powers that be, if need be that I'll will only be using my pick up truck down that way to drop the bike off and then to pick it up when it's time to go. Wouldn't be an unreasonable request in my estimation. But again, I hope to get it from the campsite up to the display area under its own power. I couldn't ride it off the racetrack grounds though since it likely won't have proper lights and mirrors. I probably won't get there until early-ish Friday morning. See you then.

Impressive so far. Everything looks right so take the time to do it right. It will most satisfying that way in the long run.

Would it be worthwhile building a faired hump into the rear section, right behind your helmet?

Wind noise is something that really annoys me and a lot of it seems to come from very unaerodynamic helmet shapes. If the "hump' was foam and formed to the back of your helmet it should be possible to cut wind noise substantially .

What does the panel think?

These kind of humps were on race cars and late model open cockpit aircraft (like the Boeing F4B-4 / P-12E or P-26) back in the day - doubling as headrests, dinghy storage, or hiding the turnover pylon.

The round shape of a head / helmet is the issue here - round shapes at the rear cause extra drag and lead to buffeting (non-symmetric Coanda effects), and should really be avoided. (*)

You could try to cure the helmet - some helmets have aerodynamic features that make the air detach.
Or you could make the helmet into the forward part of a teardrop shaped hump - works best if it's made so that the helmet is usually directly against the fairing.

(*) Due to time constraints, one of the members once made a round (instead of teardrop) boattail for his trailer, and it caused instability to the point he removed it again.
