What eco car are you patiently waiting to own?

A couple of years ago, before the rational part of my brain had time to react, I jumped at a chance to snap up the Ferarri of fuel economy, a first gen Honda Insight. With some modifications (small and big) plus a careful foot, 100 mpg (US) highway motoring was at hand.

From: http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...uft-25223.html

It was extremely cool to drive, and I enjoyed it for 2 summers. But with too many vehicles in the manger, it ultimately had to go!

I still miss the car, so the experience has me wondering: what other cars are out there that might cause me to ... abandon LOGIC all ye who enter here!

For me to buy something on impulse, it'd have to be fairly cheap, like $2-$4k, and I'd have to be confident I could sell it a year or so later without taking a loss.

The only thing comes to mind at the moment is a Prius -- the oldest ones are in that price range, and I really dig the Toyota hybrid system -- it's a hoot to drive if you're a giant fuel economy nerd. 10 years from now, maybe a Prius C? Mitsu Mirage ownership is probably in my future, but that's not really an impulse kind of thing.

(And no, War_Wagon, I'm not driving a rust-free BC beauty across the country! Temptress!)

What about you? Waiting for used prices to come down on something special? Nissan Leaf? (Original ones are 3 years old now.) Still waiting patiently for a cherry Civic VX / HX? An impossible-to-refuse deal on a VW TDI? Imported/grey market Kei-car? Chevy Volt?

(Try to keep it realistic... eg. I'd love to have a Tesla, but it just ain't gonna happen.)

The current project of my dreams is to hybridize my 1993 Tercel (yep, a Tercel, the first car I owned and I still love it) into a PHEV. ~100hp electric, ~82hp gas engine, both usable at the same time or independently. I can zing around on electric for my short daily commute or fire up the gas engine for long drives and/or fun mode. Relatively small battery pack so its not crazy expensive.

Sadly, I have neither the time nor money to undertake this project at this time.

But there's no existing car out there that is calling your name?

Eh, not really. Nothing I'd be willing to pay a fair value for.

What

I'd better not dare to even entertain the idea of a another 'dream' project until I get my works-in-progress behind me (I'm gonna live to 150 years, right?).
John Gilkison produced 10.15 Megawatts of electricity from his home photovoltaic system last year, and I'd like to end up with a solar-charged EV,at least for local commutes.A range-extender trailer might cover trips to 'grandmother's house and back.'Whether I build the car or not, that would be my long term goal.

I wouldn't mind finding a Mk4 2 door Golf TDI with manual transmission in decent shape for under $5k. Then I could let my wife fully take over the Jetta and I could do whatever I want (boat tail!) with the Golf. But I'm in the same position as others... too many cars and too many projects at the moment.

Audi a2 3l. Waiting for the 25 year mark so it can be imported easily. If I didn't have to worry about the miles driven, I'd do the show exemption.

With the $650 bike at 77 MPG, the Fiesta above 45 and the truck pushing 33, I'm not looking hard at any new vehicle. Obviously my project 3 wheeler is my priority right now and I don't see any changes in vehicles until that one is on the road.

regards
Mech
