No, it isn't great news. However, back in post #94 you said the Consumer Price Index was a lie (I assume you believe it is unreporting inflation). Then you said used car prices are up 30%. In actuality used cars (which are in the CPI) are up 40% so in fact the official number is higher than what you believe.

Notice I didn't list electricity specifically.
But now that you mention it I'm in new mexico and the nm public regulatory commission has raised rates 7% next year is trying to increase rates by 14.4% next year. I say it's because all that "cheap wind and solar" they are adding to the grid. So it's coming.
You said energy was up 50%, 100%. I pointed out two common ways people consume energy - gasoline and electricity.

If someone unexpectedly has to rent a car for a week and it costs a $1,000 that's pretty big for at least half to 2/3 the population. I tried to rent a car this summer when my wifes car was in the body shop for hail dent repair and there were none to be had. So the insurance cut us a check for what they would have paid for a rental car for those 2 weeks. (That's the money we used to fix our old hyundai with a bad engine came from).
Then in early November I rented a car and it cost several hundred more dollars than I expected. Rental car prices are not back to normal.

The first time I rented a car this year was in June. Cars were almost unavailable and they had about 10 on the lot. By July the lots were filling back up. In September I rented a full-size car in Kona, Hawaii for 5 days for $233.72 (the place where a few months earlier people were renting uHauls or paying hundreds a day). I rented a car in Charlotte, NC in November - completely normal experience. Rented a car last week in Philly - completely normal experience.

It seems your experience and mine have been different. That is why we have the CPI were prices are recorded all around the country and averaged. The problem is you don't believe the numbers unless they match your experience or what you expect them to be.

Quote:
The New York City Council on Wednesday voted to pass legislation banning the use of natural gas in most new construction, a move that will substantially slash climate-changing greenhouse gas emissions from the country's most populous city. The bill now goes to Mayor Bill de Blasio's desk for signature...

Under the law, construction projects submitted for approval after 2027 must use sources like electricity for stoves, space heaters and water boilers instead of gas or oil.
My question is: What else is 'like electricity'?

The inflation numbers are based on the cpi.
I didn't have the latest numbers on cars and it was worse than I knew.
Yeah rental cars in Hawaii are trapped there and people still aren't traveling there much so I bet you got a great deal that's like pay you to take it price. I would love to be able to say I rented a car for 5 days for less than $300.

For elctricity NM is one of the cheapest states in the country for electricity but we will probably see one of the largest jumps in price next year all because of what's going on now.

Luckily build back broke or the great green leap backwards looks like it's dead and that's good news since without that drunken spending orgy we will be luckily if we don't see 10% "official inflation".

https://www.electricchoice.com/elect...ices-by-state/

Used cars - Way up due to a shortage of cars to buy. Fix the shortage and people wont pay more than original MSRP for a 2-3 year old car.

Rental cars - not sure how this is a "major buy" but that was a temporary spike in the summer when cars were in short supply because rental companies had sold off their fleet. Prices and availability had already returned to normal by the end of the summer.

Housing - this is by far the item likely to stay elevated because so far no one is dealing with that cause - lack of housing to buy were people want to live. That said some areas will have adjustments. When I was in Charlotte, NC I saw homes listed on Zillow for tens of thousands less than what they sold for a year ago.

EDIT: It also seems you only don't believe the consumer price index when it counters what you expect. The Consumer Price Index says used cars are up 49% since June 2020 and 30% in the last year.

Unicorn fats.
Some things natural gas is just better at. Mainly boiling water.

My goal for this winter was to not burn any coal. But it looks like winter is here this week with lows in the teens and single digits and highs around freezing. I'll bust out the coal if I run out of tires, no not really, tires burn fast.

I have an inside guy at the tolk coal fired power station. I'm going to have him see if there is any way they will sell coal. They buy high quality low sulfur powder basin coal from Wyoming. It appears to be a bit lower grade than tractor supply Ohio mined, nearly graphite coal. It will probably burn a lot easier too.

Well I burned that small hill worth of wood chips. Saved a lot of fire wood. Every time I lit the coal furnace a load of wood chips went up, about 40lb. One night when it was about 2F I just kept shoveling in wood chips and burned nearly a whole municipal trash bin worth.
The wood chipper has increased wood yield about 20% to 30%. 2 to 3 and a half gallons of gas made that small hill of wood chips.

US average price for fuel (all grades) for the week of:

2/21/2022 = $3.624 per gallon
4/09/2012 = $3.999 per gallon

Fuel is still 10% cheaper than 10 year ago even without adjusting for inflation.

I guess we will know next week what a land war in Europe does to gas prices.
