Basicly using one or more powertool batteries to keep the cars battery charged and the inefficient alternator from doing anything.

I've got 12 Ah worth of 18V LiIon batteries, that should keep the battery charged up for quite a while.
You'd have the losses from the DC-DC but it would eliminate the loss from the alternator if you could find a way to turn it off. Sounds a lot more complicated than just building a higher capacity 12V battery.

The Idea obviously includes charging the 18V batteries externaly and using them to charge the 12V battery via a step down DC-DC to keep the battery charged at 100% all the time.
This causes the alternator to not charge the battery, wich should reduce parasitic drag.
Removing /bypassing it would be rather complicated in my car as it sits in front of the engine behind the firewall and under the roof.
It's REALY hard to reach.

Autobahnschleicher - you could do it either way.

Daox set up his Mirage to feed the alternator ~15 V via a DC-DC converter, which effectively turns the alternator off to reduce engine load & save fuel.

This also gives him the option of 12v regeneration via a switch tied to the brake lights. EG. Activate regen when going down hills [if trying to hold speed] or when actually decelerating.

Most of his regeneration happens by recharging the battery from the grid though. Regen just extends "range" a bit.

I am reviving this challenge for this summer. I have hardly driven my car in a year, and it currently is not even SMOG TESTED. I have coolant leaks, rusted disc brakes, and a pesky intermittent wiring problem. But I am on it and wanna get it back to legal and rolling for the return to in-person work in a little while.

CHALLENGE RENEWED. See post #1 to "get it" and understand.

I had been making it a summer thing, so it "ended" and it was fun to see you renewing it earlier this Spring. Let's just make it a permanent summer game, every summer. We'll define summer loosely, say May 1 to Sept 30. I will edit the OP to reflect its annual-ness.

Got links?

At the start of this Northern Hemisphere warm season, I'm reviving this challenge. Here is the list of the current record holders, people who got either a 70 mpg tank or a 70 mpg average on a single run. See post #1 for details of the challenge and the "prizes."

What I am looking for now is help finding profile and/or garage links for these vehicles:

THE LISTS OF WINNERS (in no particular order):

1. FTA (Full Tank Average)
PaleCivic (96 Civic DX)
PaleFit (08 Fit Sport)
Winter-beater-Metro (00 Chevy Metro)
BlackFly (98 Metro)
Sport Coupe (92 Ford Tempo GL)
AerocivicLB (92 Civic CX/VX)
The Little Car (00 Chevy Metro)
Nut Wagon (91 Civic Wagon DX)
Daox's Paseo (97 Toyota Paseo)
ecoDrudge (07 EU-spec Ford Fusion TDCi)
...others...?

2. SRA (Single Run Average)
Swarthy (14 Mitsubishi Mirage DE)
Black & Green (98 Honda Civic DX)
GreenTDI (11 Skoda Fabia Estate)
K-sight (00 Honda Insight de-hybridized with a K24 swap)
Mirage #2 (14 Mitsubishi Mirage SE)
... others ...?

Alright, by popular demand this challenge is now year round, all the time. I am adding links to the garage pages of the winners in post #1. Post a link if you have one and time to help me collect them.

This is unfair because its canadian but my Smart CDI was quite good. I would race it around in kamloops(hill city, traffic, -30c to +45C) for a lifetime avg of 4.2L/100km

https://www.fuelly.com/car/smart/for...mespeed/759642

My 2001 corvette uses more fuel rolling down a steep highway hill than the smartcar used coming up the same hill at 100km/h.
