Chernobyl docuseries."As concluded in the 2008 report of the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation: “There is no scientific evidence of increases in overall cancer incidence or mortality rates or in rates of non-malignant disorders that could be related to radiation exposure.”

Well, the problem never was the existence of radiation, it was the amount of exposure over a timeframe.

Our body is constantly repairing DNA due to a variety of damage it receives from things like cell replication, regular metabolism of stored energy, and radiation damage.

We're designed to cope with reasonable levels of environmental radiation.

Sure, it'd be better if Chernobyl didn't blow up, but we're hardly suffering from it except for perception. Then there's the fact that we'd never make that same mistake again.

Yeah no more boiling water reactors.
Chernobyl, fukushima BWR. Problem with BWR is power surges when big steam bubbles form around the fuel rods since the normal water moderates neutron flow, no liquid water, more fast neutrons, too many fast neutrons its harder if not impossible to control the reaction.
3 mile island, PWR.
To go even safer than that, liquid metal cooled reactors or pressurized heavy water breader reactors.

There's no denying that there was local spike for a limited time. People died.

The problem with pressurized water is that it dissociates hydrogen. Big bada-boom!

I just watched The Fifth Element a couple days ago. Then again, that's what I put on when I don't want to pay attention to what's on.

Actually if they would have followed the rules 3 mile island would be just another nuclear power plant.
The reactor that melted down had its backup cooling system disabled for maintenance. Which is against the rules.
You don't disable the backup coolant system on a reactor that's producing power.
IF they would have followed the rules the reactor would have shut down, the backup cooling system would have kicked in, got repaired and been running a few weeks later.

So is this a funded project, or a project in progress? What level of completion are they at, and what is the projected cost?

My parents were notified that transmission lines may need to be laid across their property. I'd rather the utility pay a small monthly rental fee than a lump sum payment, since the loss of enjoyment of the property would be continual rather than a singular event. Then again, we can't expect a new owner to be similarly compensated since they know going in the lines are there.

I don't know how eminent domain works; if people only ever get lump sum payments for the easement, or if there are ongoing compensation schemes.

Any of those pillars need to be implemented in the most free way possible, meaning to create incentives and disincentives to reach targets rather than impose draconian measures such as 1-child limits.

I'm curious to know what pillar 3 is about, because people have varying definitions of "fair", including taking some of the progress of the faster participants in a race and crediting it to the slower ones. The goal isn't for everyone to finish at the exact same time, but to enjoy the competition.

I'm also curious about pillar 4, 6, and 7. It's not the duty of the government to define what a meaningful job is, or even to provide them. The role of government is to enforce rule of law and protect the commons, and very little else.
