NeilBlanchard --Jason Torchinsky weighs in on the Oasis:

Rinspeed's Wacky New Concept Has The Best Idea For Autonomous Cars Yet

Quote:
Autonomous cars will be the first actual robots that will be deployed into society in any real quantity, and the idea that they’ll be useful for just one thing is just us stuck thinking about robots as cars.

When they can drive themselves, they can do things for you! The inclusion of that heated/cooled/multipurpose, code-activated cargo drawer is very smart, because it means the car has a secure way to do your errands.

You order food, send the restaurant the drawer code, send the car to get the food, the restaurant can securely load it while all your stuff inside the car remains safe. Brilliant!
What I find interesting is that the front and rear fenders seem switched. Maybe with four-wheel steering you can get away with zero clearance and no fender/bumper cut lines.

aerohead -- The thing I like about the gas tank is the placement, raised on a pylon so it's behind the driver's shoulders and elbows, the wider part of the body, for wake filling and reattachment.

Rinspeed boss Rinderknecht has defiled more Porsche's and hovercraft than anyone in the world (my two joys in the world).

I've wanted to kick this man in the balls for years, and would given half the chance.

However, what I see of this concept is acceptable.

If ever built, he's going to screw it up like a Great Dane humping a miniature Poodle, I guarantee it.

They're all over the map. In addition to the submarine Lotus, car/boat chimera and all, they produced the Rinspeed Yello Talbo in 1996.

http://www.carstyling.ru/en/car/1996_rinspeed_yello_talbo/

carstyling.ru has the right sidebar that contains links to everything Rinspeed has done in-house and for others (at least since 1994), right up to the Oasis.

Since you don't approve of Rinspeed's Porsches, perhaps you'll appreciate what Rod Emory has created:

I used to talk to the guy when he and his father were at Eola Village, north of Amity, OR; at their Porsche Camp-out swap meets. They ran their Porsche resto shop out of what was at one time an Army Cavalry post.

Jay Leno talks about collecting Lambroghini tractors, but I saw a 3-cylinder diesel Porsche tractor there that sold new in the Salem area in 1957.

The story on the 1960 Panhard PL17 is good too.

Nice link, this one image makes me hopeful that this concept car unlike many other concept cars has a full belly pan and is actually of low Cd.

Typically these mid-engine concept fall apart/fail underneath the engine where it is all exposed.
