I have read in several places that one way manufacturers have been "tweaking" existing models is with more "aggressive" deceleration fuel cut-off thresholds. That would contribute to an improved city rating (and real fuel economy for the typical driver).

Lostape- It gets easier with practice. The best tank I had was 59mpg but find I can keep it around 53-54 without much effort but that is with full PnG. Without it I could not break 50 mpg and that was driving at a reduced speed and watching the scangauge. Todays tank was 45mpg but that was a mix of PnG with about 110 miles of straight 60 mph with a passenger. I never drive through town and that is to my advantage. If I were to drive aggressively I doubt I would get out of the 30's.

Hello again... thanks for the response.
I have a 2005 SVM with a manual transmission. When I bought it the EPA rating was 35mpg highway which is the max I've ever been able to get. I drive 30 miles to work over mostly rolling easy roads at an average of 50mph. I do not have a scangauge but would like to get one at some point. I have done everything from maintaining tire pressure, trying different octanes of gas, coasted down hills, turned off the engine at stops and drive-throughs, put in "better" spark-plugs, etc. I keep track of mileage by dividing my trip miles by the number of gallons for my fill-up. My favorite "ride" was a 1994 geo metro 5 door with a manual transmission... always made an easy 40mpg average but the rust just took over at 169,000 miles.
I thought of a modification that would cut out a cylinder and the gas to it but then figured there were be more problems than the experiment was worth. I just wish they would make this car with a 3 cylinder geo metro engine/transmission combo. Who cares that I have over 100 hp? I'm not worried about winning races. I had a trailer hitch on my metro and towed my snowmobile, dump-runs, or riding lanwmower without any trouble. (I have a trailer hitch on the aveo too... inexpensive "truck")... (I can only get 29 mpg when pulling the trailer fully loaded).

Definitely make the ScanGauge a priority. It'll take the guesswork out of "trying everything" to get better MPG - I'm pretty sure hwh53 will agree.

If you can't afford one (it would pay for itself easily, if you're serious about using it to adjust your habits), you can make your own MPGuino for under $50.

I'm very interested to see what GM does with this platform. It currently gets slightly worse combined rated mileage than the Cobalt XFE, if I'm not mistaken. Though GM has promised to make it a "class leader" in its next iteration (whatever that means - technically, the Aveo isn't in the same class as the Yaris).

Suzuki is bringing back the Swift to the U.S. in 2010. According to the Global Suzuki page, their smallest engine is a 1.3L. I'd love to get it in a diesel. However, at about $11k, the Yaris is arguably the class leader right now.

Nope, this is an actual new Suzuki design. I assume Canada will get it at the same time as we do.

Nice work in the Aveo ppl. I have the 09 Aveo 5, which I chose over a used car for much the same reasons as the other Aveo owners.

I'm still learning the manual tranny, my biggest problem now is picking which gear for hills, esp since the engine is so much smaller than other cars, and it wants the 5th gear at 25 mph.

I'm planning on getting some form of scan gauge, however, i might go with the kiwi mpg. It's only $83 and seems to do everything I would need to do/understand with the SG. Anyone tried it out yet (it's not the massive $200+ one).

Either way, it won't be until the summer.

i'm curious, homework, how difficult was it to remove the seats?
