That video was just getting good! I have a dream of making a squatter's cabin out in the woods, I have a few spots picked out. Unfortunately I think it would need to be hidden, not at a pretty spot on a lake. I want to make a heated floor with a rocket mass heater and use homebuilt structural insulated panels for the walls and roof over a post and beam skeleton. Worst case the Forest Service or a bear would find it and tear it down, best case it would save a lost hiker's life. They used to permit stuff, like the nice cabin in the video, but not anymore. Now they would rather have people living on the streets in a city, then being somewhat self sufficient out in the woods. Even if somebody bought the land they would give them a hard time about just living simple in a cabin. I noticed in the video he had several ADA violations...

I want to build a house with just a garage, bathroom, and front room on the ground floor, and then as large a basement (or two) as possible. Resale might be complicated, but I figure insulation would be outstanding!

I've always wanted a house that you could walk right by in the woods and not realize it is there. All electric so there's no smoke.

Or a house with a below grade winter room and a summer treehouse connected by a pedal powered cable car. On an impassible grade, the cable run would be horizontal.

This guy is the underground house guru, he says at one point something to the effect, an underground home has as much in common with a basement as a penthouse apartment has in common to a dusty, hot attic.

A Kirsten Dirksen post. She's done a lot of interesting tiny houses and such. I like this 'skybreak' bubble in downtown Copenhagen:

Tesla Model X fatality - on autopilot

Tesla's in hot water again. A man died when his Model X crashed end-on into a concrete lane divider in California on March 23.

See: https://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/t...nings-ignored/

This weekend, the company revealed the car was operating in autopilot mode. Their statement also appears to shift blame: there was an apparent lack of situational awareness of the driver (ignored warnings), as well as a missing highway safety barrier that would have absorbed some of the impact energy:

Quote:
In the moments before the collision, which occurred at 9:27 a.m. on Friday, March 23rd, Autopilot was engaged with the adaptive cruise control follow-distance set to minimum. The driver had received several visual and one audible hands-on warning earlier in the drive and the driver’s hands were not detected on the wheel for six seconds prior to the collision. The driver had about five seconds and 150 meters of unobstructed view of the concrete divider with the crushed crash attenuator, but the vehicle logs show that no action was taken.

The reason this crash was so severe is because the crash attenuator, a highway safety barrier which is designed to reduce the impact into a concrete lane divider, had been crushed in a prior accident without being replaced.

Tthe driver had specifically complained to Tesla about the autopilot misbehaving at that specific spot. Perhaps he intentionally had his hands off the wheel just to see what autopilot would do, and the suddenness of the move caught him off guard.

Tesla Driver Allegedly Reported Autopilot Issues to Dealer Several Times Prior to Fatal Crash - The Drive

Quote:
Huang's family reportedly told local news that Huang made several complaints to his local Tesla dealer regarding the vehicle veering off the road with Autopilot engaged. What seemingly makes matters worse is that the dealer was allegedly told that it wasn't just any stretch of road Huang experienced the problem with, but the same stretch of road where the accident occurred.

You would think that by observing the shortcomings of the system, it would put you at heightened readiness to take over. I'd certainly be paying attention if an uncommanded lane change was occurring. Still, autopilot needs to get a whole lot better. I wonder what the stats are for miles driven per incident compared with human driving?

I have a problem with the media constantly reporting that the Waymo self driving car which also had an attentive professional driver at the helm, "killed" a pedestrian. It is more fair to say she jumped out (intentionally?) in front of the car. How many people will see these self driving test vehicles and think they can cash in for a few million dollars with a hood flop.

I've been in the States in 1987 for 3 weeks total, we drove a hire car for 2 weeks of which I had about 1500 miles of driving.
During which I literally had to swerve round pedestrians in the middle of a busy multi lane interstate TWICE. That is 2 times more than in the rest of my life.
My 2 friends also drove 1.500 miles each without such incidents though.

I saw the Waymo incident on Youtube and it seems that the low beams on the car were very low. The driver wasn't attentive, but even if she was she'd have less of a second between first visual contact and impact; hardly enough to start reacting, completely chance-less to avoid the collision.
That pedestrian should not have stepped in the road like that. But even so, why were the low beams set so low? Who's responsible for lining them up correctly?
