I've had a situation when I floored the gas and escaped. Slamming the brakes would have stopped the car right in front of a tram going more than the PSL.

But most of the time I'm preparred to stop, not accelerate.

what state are you living in?? you'll never see that around here, people merging in expect everyone else to slow to their speed and let them merge (a reason i like having a jeep, if they fail to merge properly, i win in the end)

Lol, do you mean winning like Charlie Sheen? I personally would rather spend 1/3 the $ on gas (and parts prolly) for the life of a small 60mpg car than risk a rollover in an overconfident jeep/merging incident

around here the moron drivers are either in small cars, or big flashy SUV's that would rather merge properly then risk hitting me or running off the road and scratching their chrome

Also, i refuse to drive a front wheel drive vehicle in snow; have no room for a second vehicle; and my Jeep works best for what i need in a car.

Aw come on, its fun Especially on Yoko Parada tyres.

I ran the whole of this "tragically bad winter in scotland with people being stuck on motorways for hours" in my Fabia with /55 section "racing" tyres with no issue at all. Never stuck. Not once.

Even passed a stuck Police LR Discovery.

And I have no skills.

Seriously never needed anything but a small FWD in illinois, though there are plenty of 4wds in the ditches when it snows, but small car handling and agility is best on slippery (handbrake is fun too). The %0.1 percent of days where the snow is actually too deep for me (and well past being to deep for normal people), I can dial in. Not worth increasing my annual fuel bill from $1000 to $3000.

personal preference, i don't like the idea of steering and putting down power with the same wheel in the snow

But if it works well, why not? A normal passenger vehicle averages less than 50 hp power being required, so it's not that big of a deal unless you're trying to go very fast or pull a heavy load.

Only time I prefered rear wheel drive was when I wanted to drift a bit on loose gravel or in the snow for fun. One nice advantage of front wheel drive is if you don't rotate your tires, you only have to buy tires 2 at a time. Just put the tires from the rear to the front, and the new tires on the rear. Good new tires last several times the stated mileage on the rear, and by the time you wear out the fronts the rear tires still look nearly new. (I put close to 20K miles on front tires on my Maxima with close to 200 hp, curvy roads, and a lead footed wife.)

In 25K miles of driving the Max I've only needed 2 sets of tires, and the second set is brand new. With a rear wheel drive, the rear tires wear in the center of the tread with normal wear and correct pressure, and when you do need the bit of extra traction, it's not there like in a front wheel drive with 80% of the vehicle's weight pressing the drive tires into the pavement. Good front wheel drive tires with correct pressure and good alignment will wear more or less evenly, giving you more useful miles from one pair.
