Debating on removing it, I think it is for sound dampining, going to coat the roof in a rubber coating.

Have you already removed it?

Yup came out yesterday.
Edit... I haven't noticed a differance, other than a little more vibration through the rearview mirror.

Would a windscreen-mounted rearview mirror be less affected by those vibrations?

Probably, though I hate! windscreen mounted mirrors, out of 3 cars with them 3have fallen off.
The vibration isn't bad at all just a little more than before, and only between a certian rpm range. (1600-1800).

I never had this problem, only if I pulled the mirror off (and that could eventually damage the windscreen). Altough the weight reduction from a windscreen-mounted mirror may often sound neglectable, it's still worth a try.

Weight savings would be negligble, staying with the bolted on rear veiw mirror.
In other news, got 29+ mpg in the last tank.
I really need some more aero mods on this car...

Ran into a little snag the other day.been having issues with the altenator belt slipping. The top adjuster bolt hole was stripped out. Someone put a 5/64corse thread in instead of the 8x110mm bolt. I pulled the altenator and replaced the standerd with a metric bolt that is a bit longer. I threaded it into the back side and put a nut and lock washer on the front side.
Now the snag, I drove to work when ariving I went in like normal. When I went to go home the car just cranked and cranked. Not good. I popped the hood and discovered the signal wires from the igniter to the dizzy ground itself out on the exhaust manifold. I pulled it off and the car fired right up. So i have the car mostly sorted.

Shopping for some synthetic gear oil, for the trans and rear end.
The gearbox is a bit "notchy" when cold, and the rear end howls when it is above 50mph.
Also need some tie rod ends, and bushings all around, looking for poly, like Energy. Something about 30year old rubber. Need struts(front) and shocks (rear). The clutch is old, probably original, weak and overheats easily.
Then possibly a manual steering rack, battery relocation,to the passenger side behind the seat.
Other suggestions welcome

You are giving me flashbacks to my 88 celica again, stripped out alternator bolts and all.
