Oh, okay, I didn't realize you could switch it off.

Doh, I totally forgot about the engine auto-off on the manual transmission Gen1 Insight! I only ever got to drive one once, but boy was it fun.
I'm sure there's some good reasons why they were only doing the auto-engine off on the automatic transmission Kia Soul. Obviously if it was done on the Insight, manufacturers could choose to offer it on a manual transmission version as well.

It's plain marketing / import policy.
They're telling us we can't get it on their automatics ...

Last I checked, the Soul auto-engine off feature was still "coming soon", so we can't get it in the States on the automatics either!
Seems like a neat feature though, and I'd love to see it on more cars.

We rented a Fiat in France a couple of years ago that was manual and had the auto shut-off. It was great. Also, when we were on Tour in the UK last year, the Hyundai we rented had the same thing. It was a great car. Carried a three person band (including a 300 pounder), and all of our gear (scaled down setup from our normal - flights and all) on a 12 show tour around the UK, from top to bottom. Whole tour only took 1.5 tanks of gas. Low gear ratio, manual, auto shutoff - it all worked amazingly well. It's about time we start having these things coming to North America.

Yeah the official EPA number are out. Here are the official numbers:
2012 1500 w/ 3.7L V6 w 4 spd auto (2WD): 14 mpg city, 20 highway, 16 mpg combined
2013 1500 w/ 3.6L V6 w 8 spd auto (2WD): 17 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, 20 mpg combined
So that's a 25% improvement in the combined rating. Not no shabby, although I suspect that may be largely due to how bad it was before rather than how good it is now.

Myself, I'd worry about the automatic transmission.
To improve MPG the tranny simply has to do two things: Lock up the TC quickly after every shift, and reduce engine RPM at any given road speed except when accelerating or fighting a big load.
Both things act to reduce flow of ATF through the cooler. Hot automatics fail expensively. Complex automatics fail more expensively.
Myself, I wouldn't hit a dawg in the butt with any automatic made.

I have been told buy transmission rebuilders that around 140'F is ideal.
