accurate temperature measurement

I just bought an interesting bit-o-kit.

Quote:
Features

• Compatible with any of our EGT probes & CHT sensors
• Accepts up to12 probes
• High resolution LCD display with backlighting
• Temperatures can be displayed in °C or °F; from -100 to +1200ºC (-148 to +2192°F)
• Display up to 12 channels in an easy to read bargraph format
• Visible high temperature alarm; LED changes to red color
• Recall Max Peak temperature memory Button
• Power from either 12 VDC or 24 VDC
• Supports J, K, & E thermocouple probes

The 12-channel digital thermocouple pyrometer gauge display is 3-1/8” instrument that contains all the features necessary to monitor EGTs and/or CHTs. The instrument is fully programmable by the user resulting in the most flexible solution available. The gauge display can be configured to display up to 12 thermocouples in an easy to read bargraph format.

Features

Engineered for high horsepower applications!
• EGT-IP series
• Set of 8 EGT probes • Probe diameter 1/4 inch (0.250 inch)
• Exposed Tip Sensing Junction (Fast Response)
• Response time constant: 150 milliseconds
• Includes 316 SS adjustable compression fitting
(Recommended for fuel types: Gasoline, Nitromethane, & Alcohols)
I ordered 12 total 1/4" 125 ms response EGT K-type probes (125 ms to respond/start to react will take 5X the response time to read full. AKA 125ms =625 ms/ .625 sec) other more common response times 250,550, and 1200 ms.(1.25, 2.7, and 6 sec) the gage has a 1 sec refresh rate. The more comin probes need 1-6 refreshes to show engine damaging overheat condition.

I have a 6 cyl, so 6 ports will read individual cylinders 3 will measure intake air ambient (pre turbo), charge air (pre intercooler), and intake air temp just under the grid heaters in the manifold.

i also got (all with 12' leads)
some weld on probes
some stick ons
what would you like to see tested ?
oil temp rise compared to coolant temp rise.
how the grill block effects coolant , oil, trans , under hood/ IAT

What do you think ? Did Cummins properly balanced the fuel sys AKA each burning at the same air fuel ratio/ temp (the richer the hotter/ smokier)

Dream Big Chisel Down To Reality

Do you know if it requires periodic calibration and at how many points on the scale? I'm not even sure how you could calibrate it, you would need to accurately measure the same sample with a second device that is, presumably, more accurate.

Maybe the easiest thing to do would be to periodically check for agreement for all the sensors. At ambient then in a fire/oven? Idk

If I recall correctly it has an auto calibration function.

Touch the exposed Junction to ice, you should read 32F/0C.

For example, the voltage for a type K thermocouple at a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius is 1 millivolt....The voltage on a standard type K thermocouple should increase about 40 microvolts for every degree Celsius increase in temperature
I have a VOM that uses K type digital display, and the single chanal analog 0-1600 gage currently reading the back 3 cylinders on my truck.

Got my kit

The best part is the probs will work with my vom( volt ohm meter), not just the gauge for automotive use.
Life has been hectic. Will have to delay install till after the Allison transmission conversation is done as it is taking most of my spair time and brain power.

What 3 years and 75k mi looks like on an exposed tip k-type prob.

The new probes ×12 . 1 for each exhaust port and whatever else I went to measure

as close to the exhaust valve that I can get them. Red dot is the proposed location, head side of the manifold gasket.

Prob data sheets
Surface mount stick-on probe×2 500mS k-type.

Surface Temp. Braze or Weld on ×2K-Type 300mS

Exposed tip probs×12 150mS.

No data sheets on theas×2 6.5 " k-type probs .

KSA8907 I got a chance to read the manual
Points on the scale ? All of them , LoL.1°c/f steps.. for K-type -148°f to 2192°f which is what I will be using, the gage is also compatible with J type and E-Type
"accuracy +/-5° over full range. Subject to quality of probe used."
Calibration . "Fully cold Junction compensated using a precision internal temperature reference and built-in thermocouple linearization tables. "

Sometimes it takes a bigger hammer but always dream big chisel down to reality

Progress

As cast with minor port matching done by DAP (Diesel Auto Proformance) the manufacturer.

Ported and blended

With 6 EGT probes installed/ mocked up and ready for paint iwith 2000° ceramic paint, wrap it up with double thick exhaust wrap from all-purpose pipes and put it on. I decided that installing the individual EGT probes would work in the manifold side of the gasket with the new manifold due to aftermarket design changes/improvements leaving room with exception of #4 it sits slightlw deeper and at an off angle still centered but ~ 1/3" farther from the valve.
The test showed that 4 years with the ceramic paint and wrap produced no rust or any indication that four layers of wrap had any negative effects . Paint was intact with no thermal shock cracks or flaking. That changed when I didnt rewrap after installing the Holset HX35W12. I was washing the engine bay down forgetting the manifold wasnt wraped and @about 300° the ceramic paint started poping off like popcorn. Lesson learned ceramic paint is pointless unless wrapped on headers as Road spray will compromise the ceramic paint through thermal shock.
Preliminary install of the gage and 4 probes .
1 EGT in the standered exhaust manifold location.
1 in the in the elbow attached/part of the turbocharger 75-104 @idle 170° @10psi @700° EGT 321° @25psi @ 850° EGT
1 intake horn above tbe Grid heater. 0-70° above ambant
1 in radator core right next to the inlet behind grill block (cardbord between rad support and rad full width blocking the upper 1/3 above the IC flow path . Shows the cycling of the thermostat. Its why I got the gage /test rig, to do some testing and compairisons of the effects of modds.
Hopefully I'll be able to get it in before the trip down to Moab, ut for the 240 endurance race, next week.

Great work going on here!

Soon you will know all there is to know about that ole Cummins and how it heats up while doing its chores.

Interesting how the paint failed with water but stood up to even higher heat while dry and encapsulated in the insulation.

WINTER IS COMMING

I have the gage installed temporarily, looks like Medusa's cousin is sitting on my dash, I'll get a more permanent solution built later.

Last night was upper 20'sf ambant.
68-76°compressor outlet temp @8-15psi boost.
113° peek compressor outlet temp. 81° rise
31-32°IAT at anything less than hard acceleration (not wot)
27°f under compression braking
41° peek IAT @25 mph( insufficient Ram Air) 8%hill ( medium to heavy engine loading) 3gear
312- 790° f EGT

----

Fully warmed up
Med throttle 8% grade 6th gear(.61 OD) 50mph 1150rpm 20 psi top1/3 radiator (above IC) blocked
Peek recall

EGT1- 860° @ standerd sopt in the manifold
CHT1-168° colent temp @radiator outlet
CHT2- 118° IAT @head post IC
CHT3- 258° charge air temp @compressor elbow..

Ive seen as high as 310° charge air temp @95mph 25psi boost the ic is suited to handle this for no more than 60sec. IAT's quickly rise to 120° w/55° ambient that is 7% loss of power w/same fuel delivery rate due to thermal expansion reducing 02 volume. Conversely last night showed it'sway too big for winter
