Degrading? Nope, but I never subscribed to what people thought of me or what I did to begin with. But I do like "Ecodriving" a little more just because the things I do aren't really worthy of being considered "hyper" or uberish.
(I call it common sense driving, but that's way too subjective to apply to anyone and everyone... what is sensical to me may not be for others)
I did tell some friends about it and the HM term went right over their heads but when I told them how much more efficient my car was and how much money they COULD be saving... they still had no idea what HM was but liked what I was doing.

I love the technical stuff, the moralizing, uhm, not so much. As a group you are better than that. You are doing what you can to help others who want or feel they need help. It's the best you can be, please don't spend to much energy worrying about public opinion. It will eventually swing your way, history sez so, and necessity will make it so. Use to be I couldn't spell hypermiler, and now I is one.

Ha ha -
Maybe we need subclasses of Hypermilers :
Hypermiler 1st Class : Wayne Gerdes territory.
Hypermiler 2nd Class : Willing to try all the techniques, but not employ all of them all of the time.
Hypermiler 3rd Class : Pick and choose only what feels "comfortable" to you.
Based on the above, I think I am a Hypermiler 2nd class,
CarloSW2(nd class)

i do that, people hate my 5-10 mph under the speed limit, more on hills. hehehe

degrading? what'd derogatory in conserving fuel?
honestly, being a hypermiler means learning control over your vehicle and NOT letting speed take control over you.
in a broader perspective, gaining more control over one's vehicle tends to improve one's skill, unlike being a speed freak that you just step on it and roll. i myself am guilty of being one before.
by practicing the techniques of hypermiling, i knew, there's more to it than just going.
if only i knew how to do this since the car was bought, i bet my car runs better than how it does now. since hypermiling does less wear and tear.

well, here's my thoughts:
i'm trying to be a "hypermiler" (or insert your slogan of choice) to save gas, but i drive a (small) suv, so i'm a gas hogging terrorist fund raiser.
i do maintenance on custodial and construction equipment, so i'm a "grease monkey". but i am working on a degree in computer aided drafting, so i'm a "nerd"
i love to discuss philosophy, but i enjoy a drunken party every once in awhile.
i love to bike, fish, camp, canoe, and enjoy nature, so i'm a "tree hugger". but i own a lifted, big mud-tired, 4x4 truck and like to use it (responsibly), so i am automatically labeled a drunk redneck that tears up the countryside.
oh yeah, and i'm a yankee (nothern ny) living in the south (arkansas). everyone assumes i'm from the "city", even though i grew up more country than they did.
this way i keep everyone so confused they don't know what to call me. and i stopped worrying what other people thought of me along time ago.

I'd say your a mutt, like a stray dog your a bit of this and a bit of that.
But I am too. I'm a nerd-grease monkey-hillbilly[which i like] city slicker- slacker - hard worker- and 'ecomodder'
I hate the way the media portrays this "hypermiling" I wish they would just come out and say"leave 5 mins earlier and slow the hell down! problem solved"

Term for people who hypermile to primarily save money.
All,
I don,t know about you, but I am doing this to save money, not the planet. I prefer to be called an econodriver.
Best regards,

yup, works for me.
funny thing, "tony" was a derogatory name for an italian (i'm 1/2 italian) during the early 1900's.
guess i hi-jacked this thread, huh
more on topic, i can see the term "hypermiler" becoming derogatory with all the negative press its received. the news likes to grab one catch phrase out of the pile and run it into the ground.
out of hyper/eco prefixes, i prefer "eco" anyways. i feel it gives a more descriptive overall picture of this movement.
hypermiler vs. ecomiler
hyperdriver vs. ecodriver
hypermodder vs. ecomodder
i say we ditch "hyper-" and let them run it into oblivion, and we keep the "eco-"
*edit--> i'm glad this site is called "ecomodder.com" and not "hypermiler.com", haha.......
