The numbers make more sense when you convert to bar pressure.
1 bar = 1 atmosphere = 14.7 psi
2.5 bar = 36 psi
3 bar = 44 psi
3.5 bar = 51 psi
I am going to restate this (sorry) The recommend inflate psi is like 38psi. tire sidewall rating is 45psi. My concern is once you go into the higher psi range is a blowout at interstate speeds..........

The recommended pressure by the car manufacturer is set at a pressure that promotes certain handling characteristics and ride comfort. It has little to do with the tires limit. They want to have a soft ride and promote understeer.

The maximum sidewall pressure isn't really a tires pressure limit, more of a lawyers safety limit. If you search youtube for exploding tire, you will see people pumping up old tires to 150+ PSI before they burst. If that isn't enough evidence, we have many members who have run 60 PSI for tens of thousands of miles, on multiple sets of tires, without any issue.

With all that cleared up, the data generated by ABA testing from MetroMPG reveals that the benefits from increase tire pressure start to taper off after 50 PSI.

Recommended pressure varies a lot by car and tire.

If the sidewall is rated 51, I trust that the company's engineers (and even more, lawyers) are willing to put their reputation on that pressure.

Above that and you're on your own. I'm ok with that. People do things all day every day that are outside the recommended norm.

The real danger I see is with low pressure. There is where you have blowout risk. See: Ford Explorer / Firestone. Heavy vehicle with low specified pressure (26 psi!). Higher pressure reduces sidewall flexing, which reduces sidewall heating. Lower pressure means they flex more, heat up more, and are more prone to failure.

I love what's getting posted re: psi on this thread, but I also feel like cautioning that PSI has already been debated lots of times on EM, so I hope we won't go into another argument on it. Search the site for the arguments. Heck, just llok back about 65 posts on this thread and find a debate on it: http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...tml#post380921

I'm not "against" another discussion... just wanna remind that we have had this one frequently...

Thanks guys.

Right. Tires. You're on Defenders now, right? How are you liking them? I never got a real chance to feel mine out. Breaking them in, then winter, then I sold the car. The previous Destiny's were good and Michelin says these are better.

Getting the 13" VX wheels and the new tires to the shop isa goal for the weekend. But i don't plan to put the wheels on the car until I'm read to refuel. Wanna do an oil change and engine block cleanup at the same time. Chase down my mystery super-slow oil leak.

Thank you for the clarity.... on psi. .....
I have read and also some have said LRR tires are the way to go. I have not been overal impress with the Micheln Energy X.(not that they are bad)Just makes me realize how much marketing and promotion the tire mfg will use to sell products with marginal/minimal improvement. The newer intro like orange oil tire and newer LRR are coming but this time I will hold my breath before getting "new" or "cutting" edge products.........

I hear you. I almost moved up to 15" wheels to get broader tire selection. The Michelin Defenders are almost all there are in 13" LRR. But I want the 9.7lbs VX wheel more than the gearing and selection on 15" choices. And my crappy 14" Ultra GT tires have so little tread left that I fear the rains coming... need that new tread!

Put the 13" VX wheels with 175/70 Michelin Defenders on the front of the car tonight, pumped up to 55+psi for now. The rear wheels will be keeping their 175/70-R13 Michelin HARMONY tires that I bought with the wheels two years ago (still going strong with beautiful tread).

Weighed the OEM 14" alloys and the 13" VX wheels with the tires mounted: 33lbs for 14" wheels and 27lbs for 13" wheels, give or take. So the benefit is less that I thought, but these are narrower, and the rotational mass benefit should equal at least 24lbs. I'll take it, especially since I do a lot of P&G.

Off to El Mirage tomorrow... pics to follow in another thread...

Partly cosmetic fix for how my antenna delete seals-out water, which I posted elsewhere but want to add to this thread. The whole "how to" is here: http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...tml#post404098

And this is the finished product:

Today, I am stealing a little time to work on a possible improvement to my upper grill block using more of this same leftover sheet aluminum.

Happy Christmas and merry new year to me... and you.
