Can I get 60 mpg out of my Paseo?
Can I get 60 mpg out of my Paseo?
I posted this as a poll on three different Tercel/Paseo forums. Thus far the votes have been (to my surprise) heavily favored to yes. Yes, this was even posted on ToyotaNation. Surprising difference between the Tundra and Tercel/Paseo members I'd say. Yet, the members of these boards are almost 100% interested in performance alone. Mileage has been mentioned maybe 3 times in the few years that I have been on the boards.
I will mention I have a reputation for getting things done on the boards so people do tend to trust me more than the average joe. I wonder how much this has swayed the voting. Most guys are lucky if they are breaking 40 mpg with their cars. Yet, they believe I can get 60 mpg (162% old EPA highway rating for my Paseo)?
Total votes thus far:
Yes: 12
No: 4
Now I really gotta kick it into gear so I can achieve this.

The answer, as always, is "it depends".
Under what conditions, and using what driving techniques?
You could get 60 out of an unmodified Paseo with driving technique alone, with the right kind of P&G friendly route. But your average speed would probably be in the neighbourhood of 30 mph.

Haha, yeah, I know. I didn't put any limitations on it. Although, in the ToyotaNation post I did mention I knew I could get 60, I just didn't know if I could get 60 on my daily commute consistantly.

I think you can. You've got a nice little car there. It should do it, unmodified. With a little bit of modding, it'll be a gimme.
I regularly hit 60 on my commute, but I haven't done it consistently enough to have a whole tank, yet.

Daox -
I third MetroMPG and PaleMelanesian's motion. I consider the Paseo to be the "Toyota CRX" of it's day, so I think it's pedigree of low weight and thrifty little engine can win the day for you. Look at your @#^#$*&^#$ curb weight, for crying out loud :

A 100-horsepower, 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine powered 1992-95 models. Starting in 1995, however, output dropped to 93 horsepower but torque went up. Either a 5-speed manual transmission or 4-speed automatic might be installed in a Paseo.

I agree with Metro -- it has to be under the right conditions, but I'll go for "Yes".
Have you recorded any 100% highway tanks, and if so, what was the result?
My best tanks were during 55-60 mph trips (40-42 MPG), which is difficult in my case (here it depends on the wind). I did 40 once on a mixed tank with tons of technique and fresh oil.
You have an advantage with the light weight and manual tranny.
Best FE to ya!

Jury is out.
At 123% you may have gotten all the low hanging fruit already. You may have to indulge in some adventures in gearing.

I'm sure you can. At that point, it really comes down to how skilled you are as an hypermiler, and how lucky you get with traffic conditions.

I'm negative Nancy but I'll be the first to applaud you if you do. Short of a small part tank freak fill I'm doubtful -- of the car not you.

Yes, this winter, in January (I forget the temperature) I had an all highway (half 55 & half 65 mph stretches) tank of a hair under 52 mpg. So, I know that 52 isn't even the upper limit yet. But, 60 is a little ways away from 52. I know if I had a road that was 40 mph I'd hit 60 with no problems.
Thanks for the comments guys!
