Spoiler: There's more.
1) 'extent' is not the issue.
2) You noticed how they prefaced with 'brief and short-lived.'
3) Sea-ice 'volume' is the issue.
4) Ancient ice is all gone.
5) What they get comes late, and is gone sooner.
6) It rains a lot more.
7) Rain destroys the snow.
8) Snow has a 'better' albedo.
9) Ice absorbs more solar energy.
10) Ice melts, exposing really dark water, with a 'horrible' albedo.
11) This is an amplification and feedback loop.

Does it account for losses from underwater volcanoes?

1) sea mount thermodynamics is handled separately, as a specific area of study.
2) there is an internally-derived heat flux value that is reported for Earth's total energy budget.
3) polar sea ice loss beyond natural variability, so far, is solely attributed to anthropogenic forcing.

It's almost like the entire premise of global warming, climate change was a lie.

Just found out about this because we're spending the weekend at the coast, and there's a tsunami advisory. First words out of my mouth was "global warming". Also, when I stub my toe the first words out of my mouth are "global warming".

Seems like Al Gore, Jr. nailed it with ' an inconvenient truth.'

Tonga

Now don't forget the other 29 eruptions that are happening on any given day.
S-O really shot itself in the foot when it unwittingly presented the graphic representing the heterogeneity of Earth's mantle, the actual cause for the Tonga eruption.
Some freudian slip that B.D. may never recover from.

None of the other eruptions in 2021 came anywhere close to this. I believe the biggest one only put ash up to around 50,000 feet and was a weak VEI 4, 0.3km cubed ejected. Mt st. Helens was also a vei 4 but it was a strong 4, sending up at least 1km cubed.
Jan 15 was at least a 5 and it was big. It was heard by ear further away than krakatoa 1883 which was a vei 6.
The only thing they are sure about is no one has ever seen one this big with a satellite.
