I don't recall the red pill part, but Lucas, et al, 'lifted' mainly from Valérian_and_Laureline -- 1967 and John_Carter_of_Mars -- 1912

solar wind strength correction

I over-reported solar wind intensity last go-around by a few orders of magnitude.
The correct value is : 1000-million times weaker than terrestrial wind strength, and is measured in nanopascals, whereas, winds in the lower atmosphere are measured in the 100,000 pascals.

Solar flares and magnetic storms

Major flares are no predictor of magnetic storms, as no one can say how impinging fields will be oriented.
While a solar 'day' is 26-Earth days long, the Sun's surface rotates with a variable-periodicity of 23-32-Earth days in length. A nine-day variability, depending on solar latitude.
Aurorae, produced by magnetic 'storms' occur from 42-to- 192 miles 'above' Earth's atmosphere.
Any solar surface, or solar atmospheric temperature of 1-million degrees Kelvin or above produces X-rays.
X-rays are completely filtered by Earth's atmosphere. They pose no threat.

They would still be a gating factor.

'gating factor'

And for the sake of the audience, you'd care to expand on 'gating factor'?

Always thinking of the lurkers.

Just say to yourself "Necessary but not sufficient".

Part 2 of four or five parts from everyone's favorite mad scientist lurking in his lair:

Some interesting comments dropped
Plasma's unique superpower is that it's affected by magnetism.

The Soviet Union paid Tesla's $25 million for his 'death ray' and built one in Siberia
The 'death ray' was really more of a shield than a ray.

Merriam-Webster Medical had a definition which resonated:
' a mechanism by which the passage of something is controlled.'
I can definitely see how you connected with the term!

'Shield'

In Ayn Rand's 'Atlas Shrugged', John Galt created an electronic 'shield' over Galt's Gulch, which would render stealth to the entire community, in the event of an aerial interloper happening by overhead in an aircraft.

I've not read Atlas Shrugged, but it was published in 1957.

It's a popular concept in computer science.
