68! (3.5)
Best tank yet for this crappy old Metro!
Could have easily done a kilotank (1000 kilometers), but I haven't had the gauge that close to E on this car yet, so I chickened out at 987 km (613 miles). Turns out there was another ~150 km in the tank.
Re-fuelled with the first summer gas tank of the year. Should help a tiny bit.
70 MPG would be easily attainable if I babied this car just a little more. I'm driving it a little harder (faster) than I usually drive the Firefly. Giving the little, old, blue-haired ladies a run for their money!
Also! I decided to give the Firefly a year off. I've got too many little projects going on, so I'm going to keep the Metro going until the MPGiata comes out of hibernation for its late summer/fall frolick.

Now you know what the gauge looks like for next time. Get that 1000km tank.

Limited mods! I am hurt! I would like to think that it's moderately modified. Currently...
- grille block
- kill switch
- XFi camshaft
- advanced timing
- warm air intake
- big @#$ air dam
- cardboard kammback (a raccoon or something messed it up a bit overnight)
- exterior mirrors repositioned inside
- lowered suspension
- rear wheel skirts
- RE92 LRR tires, on
- lightweight alloy wheels, with
- smooth wheelcovers
- aggressive weight reduction (gutted interior)

Yup. Will do!
~150 km on this tank so far, sitting at 72 mpg US.

I’d call your car heavily modded, in my eye... you have way more mods than I do lol

Your car is modified about as much as mine. "Moderately modified" seems right to me, too. Radical mods would be big changes to engine function and/or body shape. We have done neither of those things--just tinkered with timing, a camshaft, the alternator, and wheel wells... you know "moderate," lol.

when kayaks attack
Previously, on How to Transport Small Boats by Car Without Ruining Aerodynamics...
Above: first attempt, with 67 mpg US result ( link to previous discussion).
Below: the latest attempt is hatchbackectomy and Kammback graft. Result: 71 mpg US, at the same ambient temperature, with a 3 mph higher average speed. I'd call that progress.
The biggest downside: the plume of dust that came in the back of the car when I hit a short section of gravel road. The air currents in the car varied wildly depending the side window levels.
This kayak transporting business will be easier when the MPGiata is back on the road, later this summer...
(I would have mounted it upside down, though. The kayak, I mean.)

Obviously it needs a boat tail, ha ha, pun intended. You still have your old one? You'll need a red flag on the end of that stern.
